What is Axis & Allies?

Axis & Allies is Larry Harris's iconic Second World War strategy game, first published in 1981. Two to five players control one of the great powers of 1942 (USA, UK, USSR vs Germany, Japan), buying units, moving them across a world map divided into sea and land territories, and resolving combat with dice. It has spawned a whole family of variants and remains the gold standard for grand-strategy WWII gaming at the family end of the wargame spectrum.
