What is Calcio Storico?

Calcio storico is a brutal Renaissance-era Florentine team sport played in the sand-covered Piazza Santa Croce each June. Two teams of 27 players use hands and feet to move a leather ball into the opposing goal, with wrestling, punches and headbutts legal in most exchanges. Only three matches are contested every year.
