Catch Wrestling

Catch wrestling emerged from mid-19th century Lancashire fairground booths, blending Cumberland-Westmorland wrestling with Irish collar-and-elbow. Bouts allowed pins, submissions and "hooks" — brutal joint locks — with the aim to submit or pin the opponent. It is the direct ancestor of freestyle wrestling, professional wrestling and much of modern MMA grappling.
