Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is Rockstar Games's open-world crime-drama series, launched from Edinburgh in 1997 as a top-down 2D game and reinvented in 3D with GTA III (2001) — a moment often credited with mainstreaming the open-world genre. GTA V (2013) is by some counts the second-best-selling video game ever with 200+ million copies. Its GTA Online is a persistent multiplayer city sandbox with tens of millions of active players a decade after launch.
