Hammer Throw

The hammer throw is an Olympic event descended from the ancient Irish Tailteann Games. Athletes spin three or four rotations inside a 2.135 m circle before releasing a metal ball (7.26 kg men, 4 kg women) attached to a steel wire and handle. Techniques emphasise huge centripetal forces and precise release timing. World records approach 87 m.
