Hanetsuki

Hanetsuki is a traditional Japanese game like badminton, played especially at New Year. Two players hit a small, feathered shuttlecock (hane) — traditionally a soapberry seed with feathers — back and forth with rectangular wooden paddles called hagoita. Missing the shuttlecock results in a mark of India ink on the offender's face. The elaborate ornamental hagoita paddles sold at New Year markets have become collectibles in their own right.
