Haxey Hood

The Haxey Hood is a mass folk game played annually on 6 January in Haxey, Lincolnshire, dating back to at least 1359. A leather tube (the "hood") is thrown into a large scrum of hundreds of villagers (the "sway") who slowly try to muscle it — over hours — to the door of one of four village pubs. Whichever landlord receives it keeps the hood on display until the following year.
