What is Hnefatafl?

Hnefatafl ("King's Table") is the best-known member of the Tafl family, popular across Viking-age Scandinavia and the British Isles. Played on 11×11 or 13×13 boards, the king begins on the central throne surrounded by his defenders; twice as many attackers around the edges try to capture him before he reaches a corner square. Modern reconstructions and tournaments continue to explore its balance.
