Horseshoes

Horseshoes is a lawn-and-backyard throwing game descended from the ancient Greek game of quoits via Roman-era horseshoe throwing. Two stakes are driven into the ground about 12 metres apart. Players take turns throwing two horseshoes at the opposite stake. A shoe encircling the stake ('ringer') scores 3 points; a shoe within 6 inches scores 1. First to 40 (or 21 in cancellation scoring) wins. The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association was founded in 1914 and hosts a World Championship each summer.
