Janggi

Janggi is the Korean cousin of chess, evolved from the same Indian root as Xiangqi. Two players command 16 pieces each on a 9×10 board, moving them along the intersections. Each side has a general confined to a 3×3 palace, and elephants, chariots, cannons and horses that move very differently from their Western counterparts. Tournament play is thriving in Korea and hosted internationally by the World Janggi Federation.
