Kemari

Kemari is a ceremonial ball-keeping game brought to Japan from China in the 7th century. Eight players stand in a small square marked by four trees and take turns using their feet to keep a light deerskin ball (mari) in the air. It is not competitive — the aim is co-operative artistry, still performed at Shinto shrines like Kyoto's Tanzan and Shimogamo.
