Rummikub
Tile-based rummy game for 2-4 players invented in 1930s Romania by Ephraim Hertzano; players race to be first to lay down all their tiles by forming sets (same number, different colours) and runs (consecutive numbers, same colour).
What is Rummikub?
Rummikub is a tile-based game for 2 to 4 players, combining elements of rummy card games and mahjong. Invented in the early 1930s by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-Jewish immigrant to Mandate Palestine (now Israel). Hertzano hand-made the first sets in his backyard. It became Israel's #1 bestselling game and spread internationally after Pressman Toys acquired US rights in 1977. Tiles: 106 total — 2 sets of numbers 1-13 in 4 colours (blue, red, yellow, black) + 2 jokers. Each player starts with 14 tiles; goal: play all tiles by forming Sets (3-4 same number, different colours) or Runs (3+ consecutive same colour). Initial meld must sum ≥30 points. Once melded, tiles on table can be rearranged. Player who plays all tiles wins; scored by opposing players' remaining tile face values. World Rummikub Championship held every 3 years since 1991 (organized in Israel/Netherlands).

How it works
Objective
Be first to play all tiles from your rack to the table by forming valid sets (3-4 same number, different colours) or runs (3+ consecutive numbers, same colour).
Match structure
Each player draws 14 tiles. On each turn: (a) place tiles from rack to form new sets/runs on table, OR (b) rearrange existing table tiles + add your own tiles, OR (c) if unable to play, draw one tile from pool + end turn. First player to empty rack wins.
Rules
Basic rules
Initial meld: 30 points
First time playing tiles, sum of face values must be ≥30 points (from your own tiles only, no rearranging).
Sets: 3-4 same number
3 or 4 tiles of same number in different colours (e.g., 7 blue, 7 red, 7 yellow).
Runs: 3+ consecutive numbers, same colour
3+ tiles of same colour in numerical order (e.g., 4-5-6 blue). Ace low, no wrap-around.
Rearrange table tiles
After initial meld, you may reorganize any tiles on table AS LONG AS you play at least one tile from your rack + all groups remain valid at end of turn.
Cannot end turn with invalid table
If you can't finish rearrangement legally, put tiles back + draw penalty tile.
Draw if no play
If unable to play tiles, draw 1 tile from pool + end turn.
Rummikub! (win call)
Play all tiles + say 'Rummikub!' to end game.
Advanced rules
Joker use
Joker substitutes for any tile in a set/run; worth 30 points on rack; can be retrieved by replacing with actual tile it represents.
Joker cannot be alone
Cannot end turn with joker as only tile in group; must be paired with real tiles.
Bonus for going out
Winner scores sum of ALL opposing players' unplayed tiles (positive); joker on rack = -30 penalty.
Time limit (tournament rule)
Championship: 1-2 min per turn to prevent 'analysis paralysis' during rearranges.
Group manipulation
Advanced: 'take a tile from set → move to different set' — chains of manipulation to fit your tile.
Sabra vs American rules
Sabra (original): all rules as above. American: minor differences (some allow shorter runs).
Scoring
Winner scores value of opponents' remaining tiles (positive). Losers score negative of their remaining tiles.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Winning (going out) | + sum of all opponents' remaining tile values |
| Losing (not going out) | - sum of your own remaining tile values |
| Joker on rack when losing | - 30 points penalty |
| Numbered tile face value | = number on tile (1-13) |
| Multi-game session | Cumulative across all games |
Win condition · First player to play all tiles wins game. Cumulative highest score wins session/tournament.

Dimensions
Any table; central play area + individual racks.
Standard board game table with 4 chair spaces; central playing area for melded tiles; each player has a rack (usually plastic) to conceal tiles from opponents.
Equipment
Tiles (106 total)
104 numbered tiles (1-13 in 4 colours × 2 duplicates) + 2 joker tiles.
Tile racks (4)
Long plastic tile racks, 1 per player, to hold 14+ tiles concealed from opponents.
Score pad + pencil (optional)
Track cumulative scores across rounds.
Officiating
Casual home game self-regulated. Tournament format has judges verifying tile validity + time enforcement.

Strategies
Hoarding vs playing
Sometimes save tiles for larger meld; sometimes play everything immediately to accelerate.
Break sets/runs to play tiles
Advanced: split existing sets to fit new tiles from your rack.
Force opponent to draw
Play safely so opponents draw penalty tiles — increase their rack size.
Delay joker use
Save joker for critical run/set later; retrieve by replacing with real tile.
Watch opponents' tile counts
Track how many tiles opponents have; adjust risk-taking based on their proximity to winning.

Frequently asked
How is Rummikub different from Rummy?+
Rummikub uses tiles (not cards), plays on table where all groups are visible + rearrangeable by any player during their turn. Rummy card variants: private hand, groups played once + not rearrangeable. Rummikub adds table-manipulation complexity — very different tactical game.
Who invented Rummikub?+
Ephraim Hertzano — Romanian-Jewish immigrant to Mandate Palestine (Israel) in the 1930s. He hand-made the first sets in his backyard. Became Israel's #1 bestselling game. Pressman Toys acquired US rights in 1977; over 60 million sets sold worldwide.
What is the initial meld?+
First time you play tiles to the table, the sum of tile face values must be ≥30 points. Rule prevents players from playing single low-value tiles to slow the game. Once past this, you can play any tiles + rearrange existing groups.
Can I rearrange other players' tiles?+
Yes — this is the key feature of Rummikub. Once anyone has melded, all table tiles are shared. You can take tiles from any existing group + rearrange them to fit your new tiles, AS LONG AS: (1) you play at least one tile from your rack, (2) all groups remain valid at end of turn.
What if I can't finish my rearrangement?+
You must put ALL tiles back where they were + draw a penalty tile from pool. Advanced players attempt complex rearranges — sometimes it works, sometimes not. This risk-reward is core to game.
How much does a Rummikub set cost?+
Standard: $15-25 (basic set). Deluxe: $40-60 (velour bag + higher-quality tiles). Premium wood editions: $80-150. Digital app version: free with in-app purchases. Widely available at Target, Amazon, board game stores.
