Rules

Basic rules

  • STEER RELEASED from CHUTE + must clear 15-ft advantage BARRIER before ropers can leave BOXES

    Signature barrier advantage rule.

  • HEADER ropes STEER's HEAD (accepted catches: BOTH HORNS, HEAD + HORN, or AROUND NECK)

    Signature Header 3-catch options.

  • AFTER HEAD CATCH: Header DALLIES (wraps rope around saddle horn) + TURNS steer to left, exposing hind legs to Heeler

    Signature dally + turn.

  • HEELER: rope MUST catch BOTH HIND LEGS (called 'CLEAN HEEL SHOT') — CATCHING 1 LEG = 5-SECOND PENALTY

    Signature clean-heel-shot requirement + 1-leg penalty.

  • TIME STOPS when BOTH horses face each other (across from each other) with STEER stretched between them + FLAGGER waves flag

  • PENALTIES: BROKEN BARRIER (early start) = 10-sec penalty; 1-leg heel = 5-sec penalty
