What is Valorant?

Valorant is a free-to-play 5-vs-5 tactical first-person shooter developed by Riot Games (League of Legends studio), released June 2020. Combines the precise gunplay + economy system of Counter-Strike with hero-shooter mechanics: each player selects one of 25+ unique 'Agents,' each with 4 signature abilities. Standard competitive mode: bomb defusal / plant format (attacker plants Spike; defenders defuse) on maps like Bind, Haven, Split, Ascent, Icebox, Lotus, Pearl, Sunset, Breeze. First team to 13 rounds (best of 25 in old format, MR12 in current) wins map. Anti-cheat: Vanguard kernel-level. Growing global esports: VCT (Valorant Champions Tour) organized 2021+ into 3 international leagues (Americas, EMEA, Pacific) + Champions World Final annually. Top pro teams: Sentinels (NA), Fnatic (EMEA), Paper Rex (Pacific), LOUD (Americas Brazil), NRG (NA). Legendary players: TenZ (Canada), yay (USA), demon1 (USA), aspas (Brazil), Chronicle (Russia/EMEA), f0rsakeN (Indonesia).

How it works

Objective

Attackers: plant Spike (bomb) at Site A/B/C, protect until detonation (45 sec) OR eliminate all defenders. Defenders: prevent Spike plant / defuse Spike / eliminate all attackers.

Match structure

Bo1/Bo3/Bo5 format. Each map: 24-round split (12 Attacker + 12 Defender sides). MR12 format: first to 13 rounds wins map. Bo3 = first to 2 maps; Bo5 = first to 3.

Rules

Basic rules

  • 5 vs 5 team play

5 attackers vs 5 defenders per round.

  • Agent selection

Each player selects one of 25+ Agents at start; can't duplicate agents on same team.

  • Round objectives

Attacker: plant Spike OR eliminate all defenders. Defender: prevent plant / defuse Spike / eliminate all attackers.

  • Economy system

Money from kills + round wins/losses; spend on weapons + abilities each round.

  • Agent abilities

Each agent has 4 abilities: 2 purchased each round + 1 signature (free) + 1 ultimate (charge required).

  • 13-round win condition (MR12)

First team to 13 rounds wins map. Tied 12-12 = MR3 overtime.

  • Halftime swap sides

After 12 rounds, attackers become defenders.

Advanced rules

  • Economy tiers

Full buy ($3.9k+): rifle + full utility. Force buy ($2k+): shotgun/SMG + minimal utility. Save ($800): pistol only.

  • 5 agent classes

Duelist (aggressive fragger), Controller (smoke + area denial), Sentinel (defensive/watch), Initiator (info + entry), Flex (multi-role).

  • Ultimate abilities

Charged by kills + Orb pickups; game-changing per-round abilities (Sova Recon Bolt, Jett Blade Storm, Reyna Empress, Chamber Tour de Force).

  • Ability line-ups

Specific smoke + flash line-ups per map + site — pro-level utility knowledge critical.

  • Overtime (MR3)

Tied 12-12? Play MR3: 3 rounds Attacker + 3 rounds Defender; first team to 4 wins. If tied 3-3, next round wins OT.

  • Rank system

    Iron → Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Diamond → Ascendant → Immortal → Radiant (top 500 per region).

  • Anti-cheat: Vanguard

Kernel-level anti-cheat runs on boot; controversial but effective.

  • Monitor

240-540 Hz refresh; OLED becoming popular (LG UltraGear, Alienware AW2725DF).

  • Headset with mic

Team comms essential; open-back or closed-back per preference.

Strategies

  • Duelist entry

Duelists (Jett, Reyna, Neon, Raze) push first to open sites for team.

  • Sentinel lockdown

Sentinels (Cypher, Killjoy, Sage) hold flanks with trip wires + utility.

  • Controller smokes

Controllers (Omen, Brimstone, Astra) block enemy sightlines to enable attacks.

  • Initiator info + flashes

Initiators (Sova, Skye, KAY/O, Fade) gather info + blind enemies for teammates.

  • Ultimate stacking

Save ultimates for coordinated pushes; combo Sova + Jett + Brimstone for site takes.

  • Economy planning

Communicate buy/save decisions; force buys only when necessary.

  • Post-plant lurks

Attacker Chamber/Cypher plays back after Spike plant to catch retakers.

Frequently asked

How is Valorant different from Counter-Strike?+

Both are 5v5 tactical FPS with bomb defusal + economy. Valorant adds hero-shooter mechanics: each Agent has 4 unique abilities (smokes, flashes, walls, ultimates). CS has universal utility (grenades all players buy); Valorant abilities are agent-specific + more varied. Valorant is more accessible; CS has higher pure-gunplay skill ceiling.

How many agents are in Valorant?+

25+ agents (2024) split across 5 classes: Duelist (Jett, Reyna, Neon, Raze, Phoenix, Yoru, Iso, Waylay), Controller (Omen, Brimstone, Viper, Astra, Harbor, Clove), Sentinel (Cypher, Killjoy, Sage, Chamber, Deadlock, Vyse), Initiator (Sova, Skye, KAY/O, Fade, Breach, Gekko, Tejo).

Is Valorant free to play?+

Yes — free download + all agents unlockable via play (or bought with points). Monetization: cosmetic weapon skins + Battle Pass + Agent skins. No pay-to-win — cosmetic only.

Who is the best Valorant player?+

Depends on era. Peak eras: TenZ (Sentinels 2021 Masters Reykjavik MVP), yay (Cloud9 undefeated 2022), aspas (LOUD 2022 Champions winner), Chronicle (Fnatic 2× Masters + 2024 Champions), Demon1 (NRG 2023 Champions runner-up). f0rsakeN (Paper Rex) is another current top duelist.

What is the VCT?+

Valorant Champions Tour — Riot's organized esports circuit launched 2021. Restructured 2023 into 3 international leagues: Americas, EMEA (Europe/Middle East/Africa), Pacific. Season: League regular season → Masters (mid-year) → Champions (annual world final). VCT Champions 2024 held in Seoul.

How much do Valorant pros earn?+

Tier 1 salary: $15k-80k/month. Top players (TenZ, Chronicle): $150-500k/year including salary + streaming + sponsorships. Prize pools: VCT Champions 2024 ~$2.25M split; winner ~$1M team split.
