Yağlı Güreş
Officially Yağlı Güreş (Turkish oil wrestling)
TURKEY'S NATIONAL SPORT — traditional OIL WRESTLING (pehlivanlık) dating back to at least the 14TH CENTURY OTTOMAN period. Wrestlers (PEHLIVANS) wear only KISPET (thick knee-length leather trousers made from water buffalo hide, ~13 kg) and are DRENCHED IN OLIVE OIL before bouts, making grips extraordinarily difficult. Fights are held on GRASS fields (usually cut short). Winner must lift opponent above his head OR pin opponent's belly-button skyward. The KIRKPINAR TOURNAMENT held annually in EDIRNE since ~1362 (or 1346) is the OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY-HELD SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORLD (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2010). Top champion crowned BAŞPEHLIVAN ('Chief Wrestler').
What is Yağlı Güreş?
YAĞLI GÜREŞ (Turkish: 'oil wrestling') is TURKEY'S NATIONAL SPORT — a form of traditional wrestling in which competitors called PEHLIVANS (from Persian 'pahlavan' = hero) are DRENCHED IN OLIVE OIL before bouts, making it extraordinarily difficult to secure holds. HISTORY: Traceable to at least the 14TH CENTURY OTTOMAN era; legend attributes the founding of the KIRKPINAR TOURNAMENT to 1346 (or 1362) when 40 OTTOMAN SOLDIERS of ORHAN GAZI's army wrestled + two brothers wrestled to the death, being buried under a fig tree that later sprouted a spring — 'KIRKPINAR' meaning 'forty springs'. Held annually since (~700 years continuously = OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY-HELD SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORLD — inscribed on UNESCO's REPRESENTATIVE LIST OF THE INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY 2010). WRESTLERS wear only KISPET — thick knee-length trousers made from WATER BUFFALO HIDE, hand-stitched, weighing ~13 KG when soaked in oil; the kispet has REINFORCED CUFFS at the knee that opponents can grip. Torso is BARE + drenched in olive oil poured from a large brass jug (over 1 tonne of olive oil used per Kirkpinar tournament). WRESTLERS MATCH by height/weight + rank (BAŞ, BAŞALTI, ORTA BÜYÜK, ORTA KÜÇÜK, DESTE BÜYÜK, DESTE KÜÇÜK, TOZKOPARAN, MİNİK — 8 categories). VENUE: grass field (ER MEYDANI); bouts announced by CAZGIR (traditional announcer with poetic invitations). WIN CONDITIONS: (1) LIFT opponent above head + carry 3 steps, (2) TURN opponent's belly-button skyward (his back on ground), (3) YIELD by opponent. Bouts historically had NO TIME LIMIT — legendary 1975 Kırkpınar final lasted 5+ HOURS in scorching sun; today limited to 40 MINUTES + 15 minutes extra time. RITUALS: PEŞREV (traditional pre-match dance where pehlivans walk in circle, slap thighs, salute crowd + Allah); ZURNA + DAVUL music (Turkish oboe + drum) plays throughout. CHAMPION CROWNED BAŞPEHLIVAN ('Chief Wrestler') = highest honor in Turkish sport; wins the ALTIN KEMER ('Golden Belt' — must win 3 years in a row to keep permanently). LEGENDARY PEHLIVANS: KOCA YUSUF (1857-1898) — 'Terrible Turk,' first world champion; KURTDERELI MEHMET (1864-1939); KARA ALI (1930s); AHMET TAŞÇI (record 9x Kırkpınar Başpehlivan); RECEP KARA. GLOBAL: Practiced primarily in TURKEY (200+ Kırkpınar-style tournaments annually) + NORTHERN GREECE (Thrace) + BULGARIA + Turkish diaspora. Some variants of oil wrestling also exist in CENTRAL ASIA (Türkmen köreşi) + IRAN.

Why oil + leather trousers?+
The OLIVE OIL is central: makes GRIPS EXTRAORDINARILY DIFFICULT — wrestlers must use leverage + kispet manipulation rather than skin holds. The KISPET's reinforced cuffs are the ONLY LEGAL GRIP POINTS (plus reaching inside — paça kispet — is unique to Turkish oil wrestling). The oil-soaked buffalo-hide trousers become extremely heavy (~13 kg), adding endurance component. Together, oil + kispet make yağlı güreş utterly distinct from all other wrestling styles.
