What is Brass: Birmingham?
BRASS: BIRMINGHAM is a 2018 ECONOMIC STRATEGY BOARD GAME designed by MARTIN WALLACE (co-designed with GAVAN BROWN + MATT TOLMAN) + published by ROXLEY GAMES. It is a re-imagining of Wallace's earlier BRASS (later renamed BRASS: LANCASHIRE, 2007) set in a different region of England during the Industrial Revolution. HELD #1 ON BOARDGAMEGEEK RANKINGS from 2020-2023+ — the highest-rated board game in the world by hobbyist community vote. THEME: 2-4 players are INDUSTRIALISTS in BIRMINGHAM + surrounding West Midlands of England, 1770-1870, during the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. Build COAL MINES, IRON WORKS, COTTON MILLS, MANUFACTURERS + BREWERIES; connect them via CANALS (Canal Era) + RAILWAYS (Rail Era); sell goods to distant markets. GAMEPLAY: The game runs for TWO ERAS: (1) CANAL ERA (rounds 1-8 or so, until draw deck depleted); (2) RAIL ERA (second half). Between eras, all level-1 industries + canals are removed — you rebuild for the rail era. Each turn a player takes 2 ACTIONS from: (a) BUILD an industry tile on a city location (using resources + money); (b) NETWORK — build a canal or rail link between cities (rail costs coal + beer); (c) DEVELOP — remove a level-1 industry tile from your player mat (costs iron); (d) SELL — flip cotton/manufactured goods/pottery tiles by shipping to markets (costs beer!); (e) LOAN — take £30 loan (income drops); (f) SCOUT (discard 3 cards + get 2 wild cards). RESOURCE MARKETS: COAL + IRON + BEER have dynamic COMMON MARKET prices — supply/demand pricing; players fight over cheap resources. Flipping industries produces INCOME (VP-per-round income track) + VP at end. Beer is unique to Birmingham (Lancashire uses cotton/shipping) — must burn beer to sell. VICTORY: Score end-of-Canal-Era VP + end-of-Rail-Era VP for (a) flipped industry tiles (0-9 VP each printed) + (b) built links (VP based on adjacent flipped industries). Highest total wins. DEEP INTERACTION: opponents' networks + flipped industries earn YOU VP if you sell to them; competing to control key coal/iron/beer supplies; blocking city locations. AWARDS + RANKINGS: BGG #1 GAME OVERALL 2020-2023 (highest-rated board game in the world for years); GOLDEN GEEK BEST STRATEGY GAME 2018; UK GAMES EXPO 2019 Best Strategy Game; DICE TOWER Game of the Year 2018. DIGITAL VERSION: BRASS: BIRMINGHAM DIGITAL by DIRE WOLF on Steam + iOS + Android (2022) — excellent implementation with async online + AI. EXPANSIONS: (a) BRASS: BIRMINGHAM (base game); (b) fan-made variants; core game rarely expanded — considered near-perfect as-is. Publisher ROXLEY (Canada, based in Calgary) known for premium production — includes iron money tokens + linen bag + custom insert. Considered THE PINNACLE of Wallace's design career + THE HEAVY EURO GAME EXEMPLAR.

How it works
Objective
Score most Victory Points by end of Rail Era from (a) flipped industry tiles + (b) built connection links (VP scaled by adjacent flipped industries).
Rules
Basic rules
Two-era structure
CANAL ERA (round 1 until deck exhausts, ~8 rounds) then RAIL ERA (same). Between eras, level-1 industries + all canals removed.
2 actions per turn from 6 options
Build / Network / Develop / Sell / Loan / Scout — each uses card from hand as location or industry match.
Cards drive build locations + industries
Location cards let you build in specific city; industry cards let you build that industry anywhere legal.
Selling requires BEER
Cotton, manufactured goods, pottery flip via SELL action — must supply beer barrels (either your own or opponent's brewery).
Coal + iron on dynamic market
When you need coal/iron and none nearby (via network), buy from market at rising prices. Opposite when you produce — sell to market at declining prices.
Income track advances via flipped tiles
Flipping industry tiles increases income position; income paid in coins each round.
End-of-era VP scoring
Flipped industries score printed VP; links score based on adjacent flipped industry VP values. Sum both eras — highest wins.
Scoring
End-of-Canal + End-of-Rail: flipped industry tiles score printed VP (0-9) + links score based on VP of adjacent flipped industries in that era.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Flipped industry tile (level 1-4) | 0-9 VP each based on tile level |
| Canal link (Canal Era) | 1 VP per adjacent flipped industry in Canal Era |
| Rail link (Rail Era) | VP per adjacent flipped industry in Rail Era; ranges 0-4 typical per link |
| Income track | Not VP directly — feeds ability to build more |
Win condition · Highest total VP after Rail Era scoring. Tiebreak = most money remaining.

Strategies
Manage income vs VP tension
Low-level flipped industries (cotton 1, brewery 1) grant good income but low VP; high-level (level 3-4) grant huge VP but require rail era + rare resources.
Beer scarcity is key
You MUST have beer access to sell; blocking opponent beer or hoarding your breweries wins games.
Location cards for early cities
Save Birmingham/Coventry location cards for good spots; industry cards more flexible late-era.
Rail era: connect to markets
Rail links score based on flipped industries — connect to opponent industries + markets = huge points.
Coal-market timing
Sell coal to market early (cheap coal supply raises price) then buy back for own network later.
Develop expensive industries
Use Develop action to skip past cheap level-1/2 industries on your mat — unlock high-VP level-3/4 tiles faster.
Terminology
- Canal Era
- First half of game; only yellow canal links; certain industries only.
- Rail Era
- Second half; black rail links (cost coal + beer); all industries available.

- Chien
- Not used here (that's French Tarot).
- Location card / Industry card
- Two card types; drives BUILD action legality.
- Scout
- Action that discards 3 cards for 2 wild cards.
- Merchant tile

Is Brass: Birmingham hard to learn?+
YES — considered a HEAVY (Weight 3.9/5 on BGG) game. First play typically 3-4 hours as players parse the 2-era structure, 6 actions, coal/iron/beer markets + card-driven builds. However once learned, 2-hour game times are normal. Recommended: play digital version first (Dire Wolf app) or watch playthrough video. Not a good gateway game — best for experienced euro-game players.
