Players hurl PELOTA (hardened rubber core with GOATSKIN cover, ~125 g) that reaches speeds >300 KM/H (fastest ball speed of any sport per Guinness). Traditional in FRENCH + SPANISH BASQUE COUNTRY, CUBA, PHILIPPINES, MIAMI (dai Alai fronton 1926-2019). Governed by FIPV; World Championships every 4 years.

Objective

Score more points by placing ball opponents can't return (like squash + jai alai combo).

Rules

Basic rules

  • SERVE: player BOUNCES ball, catches with cesta, then HURLS at front wall so ball rebounds between service lines

    Signature bounce + hurl serve.

  • RALLY: ball must hit FRONT WALL each shot; can rebound off side + back walls before opponent must return (in air or after 1 bounce)

    Signature front-wall-mandatory rally.

  • CATCH-AND-THROW MUST BE CONTINUOUS: no holding ball in cesta (max ~1 sec) — 'atchiki' foul if held too long

    Signature continuous throw rule (atchiki).

  • POINT: opponent fails to return, ball hits ground twice, ball hits floor before front wall, or foul

    Signature point conditions.

  • ROTATION (in Miami-style): after each point, LOSING team leaves + NEW team plays winning team — quiniela format
