Dota 2
Iconic multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) esport by Valve — 5 vs 5 team battle to destroy opponent's Ancient across three lanes; features 120+ unique heroes with complex ability + item interactions.
What is Dota 2?
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game developed and published by Valve Corporation, released July 2013. Sequel to the fan-made Warcraft III map 'Defense of the Ancients' (DotA, 2003). Two teams of 5 players (Radiant + Dire) select heroes from a roster of 124 heroes; each team defends its base + tries to destroy opponent's central 'Ancient' structure. The map has 3 lanes (top/mid/bottom) + jungle areas with neutral creeps. Games last 30-60+ minutes. Dota 2 is famous for the deepest, most complex meta in esports — every hero has unique abilities + up to 6 item slots + dozens of Aghanim's Scepter/Shard upgrades. Home of The International (TI) — the annual world championship funded largely by community cosmetic sales (Battle Pass); has held all-time esports prize pool records: TI10 (2021) $40M+ prize pool ($18.2M to winner Team Spirit). Top pro teams: OG (multi-national), Team Spirit (CIS/Ukraine-focused), Team Liquid (EU), PSG.LGD (China), Evil Geniuses (USA), Team Secret (EU). Legendary players: Miracle-, Dendi, Puppey, Notail, Ceb, Ame, Yatoro.

How it works
Objective
Destroy the opposing team's Ancient (main base structure at their base). Achieved by pushing lanes, killing enemy heroes, farming resources, and coordinating team fights.
Match structure
Draft phase (bans + hero picks alternately). In-game: farm gold + XP; kill towers; win team fights; siege enemy Ancient. First team to destroy enemy Ancient wins.
Rules
Basic rules
5 vs 5 hero draft
Each player picks 1 hero from 124-hero pool; bans typically 7 per team = 14 heroes banned.
Farm gold + XP
Last-hit enemy creeps for gold + XP; farm jungle; kill heroes for bounty + streak bonus.
5 positions (roles)
Position 1 (Carry) — bottom lane; Pos 2 (Mid); Pos 3 (Offlane); Pos 4 (Roaming Support); Pos 5 (Hard Support).
Level up abilities
Each hero has 4 spells; level up per level (max 25); ultimate at level 6/12/18.
Buy items
6 item slots + backpack + neutral slot; combining recipes creates advanced items.
Destroy towers/barracks
3 tower tiers per lane + 2 barracks per lane. Destroying barracks empowers pushing creeps.
Destroy Ancient to win
The final structure in each base — victory condition.
Advanced rules
Bans + Picks (draft phase)
Captains Mode: 7 bans + 5 picks per team, alternating. Rank/matchmaking: All Pick auto-draft.
Neutral items (jungle drops)
Killed neutral creeps drop tiered items (T1-T5) unlocking at 7/17/27/37/60 min game time.
Aghanim's Scepter + Shard
Each hero has a Scepter upgrade (boost) + Shard upgrade (extra ability); reshape gameplay.
Roshan (map boss)
Neutral monster in cave; killing him drops Aegis of the Immortal + Cheese (revive + heal); huge objective.
Day/Night cycle
5 min day / 5 min night — some heroes have night vision advantage or day-only abilities.
Buyback
Pay gold to instantly respawn — critical late-game defensive option.
Denies
Kill your own creeps + towers to prevent enemy gold/XP — unique to Dota.
Courier + Fountain
Each team has invisible flying courier to deliver items; Fountain heals players at base.

Frequently asked
How many heroes are in Dota 2?+
124 heroes (2024). Each has 4-5 unique abilities + Aghanim's Scepter + Shard upgrades. Adds up to hundreds of combinations. Every hero is playable at pro level, though meta favors 30-50 at any given time.
What is The International?+
TI — annual world championship of Dota 2 held by Valve since 2011. Famous for record-breaking prize pools funded by community Battle Pass sales. TI10 (2021) $40M prize pool ($18.2M to winner Team Spirit) — largest single-tournament prize in esports history at the time.
Dota 2 vs League of Legends?+
Both MOBAs but Dota 2 is more complex (courier, denies, buyback, more items) + higher skill ceiling. LoL more polished + accessible, larger player base globally (150M vs 15M peak). Dota 2 has bigger single-tournament prize pools ($40M TI vs $2M Worlds).
How long is a Dota 2 game?+
Average 35-45 minutes. Games can end as early as 15-20 min (stomp) or extend to 80+ min (marathon). Pro games typically 30-50 min. No time limit — game ends when Ancient destroyed.
Is Dota 2 free to play?+
Yes — Valve made all heroes + gameplay free from launch (2013). Monetization via cosmetic skins ('sets', 'immortals') + Battle Pass (funds TI prize pool). No pay-to-win — everyone has same competitive access.
Who has won the most Internationals?+
OG (Denmark/multi-national) — ONLY team to win TI twice: TI8 (2018) + TI9 (2019) with captain N0tail. All other teams have won once max. Team Spirit (CIS) is most recent double-TI contender (TI10 2021).
