Hang Gliding
Air sport in which a pilot flies a rigid-framed delta-wing aircraft, launched by running down a slope, controlled by shifting body weight relative to the wing while suspended in a harness underneath.
What is Hang Gliding?
Hang gliding is an air sport in which a pilot flies a light, non-motorised, foot-launched rigid-framed aircraft called a hang glider. Most modern gliders are 'flexible wings' consisting of an aluminum alloy or composite frame covered with synthetic sailcloth to form a wing. Typically, the pilot is harnessed in a prone position (headfirst) suspended from the wing frame and controls the aircraft by shifting body weight in opposition to a control frame (a triangular metal bar). Invented by Otto Lilienthal (Germany, 1891); modern flexible-wing design by Francis Rogallo (NASA, 1948). Popular since 1970s. Modern hang gliders reach 100+ km/h and glide 15-20:1 (horizontal:vertical). Cross-country distance records exceed 700 km. Governing body: FAI CIVL. Major events: FAI World Championships, Class 1 (flexwing) and Class 5 (rigid wing) categories.
