What is Paragliding?

Paragliding is a recreational and competitive adventure aviation sport in which the pilot flies a lightweight, foot-launched, free-flying, glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing whose shape is formed by air pressure entering vents in the front. First developed by David Barish (US, 1965) as a NASA parachute prototype, popularised in Europe (French Alps) in the 1980s. Modern paragliders are certified into classes: EN-A (beginner), EN-B (progression), EN-C (sport), EN-D (competition/expert). Common activities: soaring (ridge lift), cross-country (thermal-hopping XC), acrobatic (acro), tandem (with passenger). Cross-country distance records exceed 600 km. Governing body: FAI Commission Internationale de Vol Libre (CIVL). Major events include FAI Paragliding World Cup and X-Alps race across the Alps.

Objective

Recreational: enjoy flight, land safely. Competition XC: fly furthest declared route or race task. Acro: perform judged aerial maneuvers.

Basic rules

  • License required

    APPI, USHPA, BHPA (British) — 20-30 tandem/solo flights + written exam for solo rating.

  • Wing class matching pilot skill

    EN-A/B for beginners; C/D require competition-level skills.

  • Right of way

    Aircraft on right has priority; head-on = both turn right; different altitudes: lower has priority.

  • Ridge soaring: same ridge = same direction

    Convention: fly right side of ridge; turn 180° at end.

  • Land into wind

    Reduce ground speed; flare wing at correct height to stall safely.

  • Cloud clearance

    500ft clear of clouds under visual flight rules.

  • Sunset flight prohibited

    Must land before sunset; night flying not allowed in most jurisdictions.

Strategies

  • XC strategy: climb high, glide far

    Circle in thermal to gain altitude, then glide toward next thermal source (dark ground, cumulus cloud).

  • Ridge soaring economy

    Fly close to ridge for maximum lift; avoid rotor turbulence behind.

Statistically ~1 fatality per 1000 pilots per year (higher for competition pilots). Injury rate similar to horseback riding. Modern reserves + wing certification + training dramatically improved safety since the 1990s. Beginners under supervision are very safe.

Paragliding vs hang gliding?+

Paragliding: soft wing, easier to pack (rucksack), slower (25-50 km/h), most popular free-flight sport. Hang gliding: rigid delta wing, faster (35-100 km/h), harder to set up, more efficient in cross-country. Paragliding has 10:1 pilots ratio.

What is X-Alps?+

Red Bull X-Alps is a biennial paragliding + hiking race across the European Alps from Salzburg, Austria to Monaco (~1,200 km). Pilots hike + fly with no support vehicles. Christian 'Chrigel' Maurer has won 7 times.
