What is Love Letter?
LOVE LETTER is a 2012 MICROGAME CARD GAME designed by SEIJI KANAI + originally self-published by KANAI FACTORY (Japan) at Tokyo Game Market. It was so successful that ALDERAC ENTERTAINMENT GROUP (AEG) licensed it for Western release in 2012-2013, launching a global microgame movement + one of the BEST-SELLING SMALL CARD GAMES OF ALL TIME (5M+ copies). Considered THE BENCHMARK microgame + THE BEST FILLER game ever made — its ENTIRE RULES fit on a single card + a game runs 15-20 minutes. THEME: Players are SUITORS trying to deliver a LOVE LETTER to PRINCESS ANNETTE inside a royal palace. The card who receives your letter WINS your heart (game round). Cards represent PEOPLE OF THE COURT (Guard, Priest, Baron, Handmaid, Prince, King, Countess, Princess) that you use, avoid, or deceive to get closer to the Princess. GAMEPLAY: Just 16 CARDS TOTAL (original edition): 5 GUARDS (value 1), 2 PRIESTS (2), 2 BARONS (3), 2 HANDMAIDS (4), 2 PRINCES (5), 1 KING (6), 1 COUNTESS (7), 1 PRINCESS (8). SETUP: Shuffle 16 cards, burn 1 (or 3 face-up if 2-player); deal 1 card to each player. On your turn: DRAW 1 CARD from deck (now hold 2), then PLAY 1 (must be one of the two) + resolve its effect. EFFECTS: (1) GUARD (1) — name a NON-GUARD card + a player; if they hold that card, they're out; (2) PRIEST (2) — see another player's hand; (3) BARON (3) — compare hands with another player, lower value out; (4) HANDMAID (4) — you're PROTECTED until next turn (no card can target you); (5) PRINCE (5) — force target (including self) to DISCARD their hand + draw new; (6) KING (6) — TRADE HANDS with another player; (7) COUNTESS (7) — must be discarded if you also hold King or Prince; (8) PRINCESS (8) — if forced to discard Princess (Prince, comparing, etc.), you LOSE ROUND. Play continues until only 1 player remains OR deck runs out — then highest-value card in hand wins. WINNING PLAYER receives 1 TOKEN OF AFFECTION. Play multiple rounds until someone reaches TARGET TOKENS: 2p = 7 tokens; 3p = 5; 4p = 4; 5-6p (later editions) = 3. STRATEGIC DEPTH: DEDUCTION (tracking cards played + cards protected) + BLUFFING (opponents don't know your hand) + RISK (Princess = huge target + huge win). Considered the perfect design of ELEGANT + REPLAYABLE microgame. AWARDS: (a) GOLDEN GEEK BEST PARTY GAME 2013; (b) MENSA SELECT 2014; (c) UK GAMES EXPO Best Party Game 2014; (d) TRIC TRAC BEST FAMILY GAME 2013; (e) GOLDEN GEEK BEST CARD GAME 2013; (f) SPIEL DES JAHRES 2014 RECOMMENDED. EDITIONS + THEMED REPRINTS: (a) LOVE LETTER (2012 Kanai Factory / AEG 2012); (b) LOVE LETTER PREMIUM (2019 Z-Man/AEG — larger cards, thicker components); (c) LOVE LETTER BIG BOX (2019 AEG — 2-6 players, additional cards); (d) THEMED VERSIONS: BATMAN LOVE LETTER, ADVENTURE TIME, MUNCHKIN, KINGDOM HEARTS, THE HOBBIT, SANRIO, INFINITY GAUNTLET (2020 Marvel), ARCHER, LORD OF THE RINGS, LETTERS TO SANTA, STAR WARS, MYSTERIUM, and 20+ more. How it works
Objective
Deliver your Love Letter to the Princess (win the round) by (a) being the last player standing, OR (b) holding the highest-value card when the deck runs out. First player to accumulate target Tokens of Affection (2p: 7, 3p: 5, 4p: 4) wins the match.
Rules
Basic rules
Setup: shuffle 16 cards, burn 1
Deal 1 card to each player (2p also deals 3 face-up bonus cards).
Turn: draw 1, play 1
Draw 1 card from deck (now hold 2), play 1 of those 2 + resolve its effect. End hand = 1 card.
Guard (1) — guess opponent's card
Name a non-Guard card + a player; if correct, they're out.
Priest (2) — peek at hand; Baron (3) — compare hands; Handmaid (4) — protected
Various information/interaction effects.
Prince (5) discards hand + redraws; King (6) trade hands
Powerful but dangerous — Prince on Princess kills her.
Countess (7) auto-discard if holding King/Prince
Passive rule prevents King+Countess or Prince+Countess combos.
Princess (8) — discarding her = lose round
So high but forced-discard = elimination.
Round end: last standing OR highest card when deck empty
Winner gets 1 Token of Affection.
Match end: first to target tokens (7/5/4 for 2/3/4 players)
Overall winner.
Scoring
Round winner = 1 Token of Affection. First to accumulate target tokens (varies by player count) wins the overall match.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Win a round | 1 Token of Affection |
| 2-player target | 7 Tokens to win match |
| 3-player target | 5 Tokens |
| 4-player target | 4 Tokens |
| 5-6 player target (Premium/Big Box) | 3 Tokens |
Win condition · First player to reach target Tokens of Affection wins the match.

Strategies
Track cards played + burned card
16 cards total, 1 burned + hand cards; deduce opponents' hands from what's discarded.
Guard the most common cards
5 Guards + 2 Priests + 2 Barons — after seeing several played, use Guard for likely-remaining.
Handmaid = 1-turn safe
Play Handmaid when you hold Princess or Countess — buys time.
Princess = ultimate risk
Holding her wins if you survive; but Prince/Baron force = auto-loss.
Countess bluff
Discarding Countess with something OTHER than King/Prince = signals you don't hold them (unreliable info).
King trade for endgame
Trading with a suspected high-card opponent late = wins comparisons.
2-player fast play
2p sees 3 burned cards; deduction is easier — game is faster + more tactical.
Terminology
- Token of Affection
- Win-tracking token; awarded to round winner.
- Burned card
- Face-down card removed at start (2p also 3 face-up); unknown to players.
- Round
- One complete play through deck; ends when 1 player left OR deck empty.
- Match
- Multiple rounds until someone reaches target tokens.
- Handmaid protection
- 1-turn immunity from opponent card effects.
- Countess trigger
- Must discard Countess if you also hold King or Prince (auto-discard).
- Kingdom
- Slang for 'in play with card'.
