Omaha Poker
Officially Omaha Hold'em
Community card poker variant with 4 hole cards (vs Texas Hold'em's 2). Player MUST use EXACTLY 2 hole + 3 community cards for hand. Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) most popular variant. High-action game with more combinations = higher variance + bigger pots. Second most popular poker game globally after Texas Hold'em.
What is Omaha Poker?
Omaha Hold'em is COMMUNITY CARD POKER VARIANT similar to Texas Hold'em but with KEY DIFFERENCE: players receive 4 HOLE CARDS (not 2) and MUST USE EXACTLY 2 HOLE CARDS + 3 COMMUNITY CARDS for their 5-card hand. This 'exactly 2' rule (called 'MUST-USE-2') is critical — cannot use 1 or 3 hole cards regardless of what makes best hand. Originated USA 1980s (Vegas via Robert Turner from Detroit); named after OMAHA, NEBRASKA (loose origin story). VARIANTS: (1) POT-LIMIT OMAHA (PLO) — most popular; bet max = size of pot. (2) NO-LIMIT OMAHA — rare due to gambling extremes. (3) LIMIT OMAHA — fixed betting; low variance. (4) OMAHA HI-LO 8-OR-BETTER — pot split between highest hand + lowest 8-or-better hand. GAMEPLAY IDENTICAL to Texas Hold'em: preflop → flop (3 community) → turn (4th) → river (5th) betting rounds. WHY HIGH ACTION: 4 hole cards = 6 possible 2-card combinations per player = more starting hand combinations = more players continue to flop = bigger pots + higher variance. Considered HARDER + MORE COMPLEX than Texas Hold'em due to combinatorial complexity. Popular high-stakes online + live cash game. PLO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS at WSOP (World Series of Poker) + WPT (World Poker Tour). Second most popular poker game globally after Texas Hold'em.

Frequently asked
What is Omaha Poker?+
COMMUNITY CARD POKER VARIANT like Texas Hold'em but with 4 HOLE CARDS (vs Hold'em's 2) and MUST USE EXACTLY 2 HOLE + 3 COMMUNITY CARDS for hand. Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) most popular variant. HIGH ACTION due to 6 possible 2-card combinations per player = more hands play + bigger pots. Considered HARDER + MORE COMPLEX than Hold'em due to combinatorial complexity. Second most popular poker game globally after Texas Hold'em. WSOP + WPT + EPT have PLO championship events. Popular high-stakes online cash game.
How is Omaha different from Texas Hold'em?+
TEXAS HOLD'EM: 2 hole cards, USE ANY combination (0, 1, or 2) with community. OMAHA: 4 hole cards, MUST USE EXACTLY 2 with 3 community. HOLD'EM lower variance + simpler; OMAHA higher variance + more complex. OMAHA STARTING HANDS closer in value (fewer 'dominated' hands); more players see flop; bigger pots. OMAHA hand values SHIFT — top pair often no good; nuts often needed. Hold'em skill is HAND SELECTION + BLUFFING; Omaha skill is HAND READING + POT ODDS.
Why is Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) popular in high stakes?+
PLO IS HIGH-VARIANCE + BIG POTS. 4 hole cards + community = 26 possible 5-card hands per player (vs Hold'em's 21). MORE HANDS play + BIGGER pots + MORE ACTION = more money moves. Pro players find PLO more skill-heavy (harder to master) so EDGE opportunities greater. High-stakes online PLO (PokerStars, GGPoker) has $100/$200+ blind games running 24/7. Live PLO at WSOP + Bellagio + Aria in Las Vegas draws top players. Considered 'action game' for high-stakes players seeking bigger swings than Hold'em.
