Overwatch 2
Officially Overwatch 2 (Blizzard Entertainment)
Blizzard's free-to-play 5v5 hero shooter (successor to Overwatch, launched 2022) — 40+ heroes across Tank/DPS/Support roles; Overwatch Championship Series (OWCS) succeeded the Overwatch League as top competitive circuit.
What is Overwatch 2?
Overwatch 2 (Blizzard Entertainment, launched October 2022) is the free-to-play successor to Overwatch (2016), transitioning the game from 6v6 to 5v5 (one Tank per team) and unlocking a live-service model with seasonal battle passes. The game features 40+ heroes divided into three roles — Tank, Damage (DPS), and Support — each with unique abilities and ultimate weapons. Modes include Escort (payload push), Hybrid (capture + escort), Push (bidirectional robot escort — OW2 exclusive), and Control (rotating captures). After the Overwatch League (franchised city-based league) folded in late 2023, Blizzard launched the Overwatch Championship Series (OWCS) in 2024, an open-circuit format with regional stages (NA, EMEA, Asia) feeding into major LAN events and a world championship. The scene is smaller than OWL's peak but healthier as an open circuit, with $500K+ prize pools at majors.

How it works
Objective
Complete the map objective (escort payload, capture point, push robot) before the timer expires — or prevent the enemy from doing the same on their turn.
Match structure
Best-of-5 or best-of-7 maps in OWCS finals. Each map plays through mode-specific objectives with attack/defense rotations. Overtime + map draws resolved by pass % or checkpoint count.
Rules
Basic rules
5v5 role composition
Every team: 1 Tank + 2 DPS + 2 Support. Role lock enforced in ranked + esports.
Objective-based modes
Escort (push payload from A to B), Hybrid (capture then escort), Push (bidirectional robot escort), Control (best-of-3 capture points).
Respawns are permanent
No round-based one-life; killed players respawn after ~10 seconds and rejoin fight.
Ultimate charge economy
Every hero has an ultimate ability that charges over time + damage; ultimate coordination is decisive.
Advanced rules
Hero swap mid-round
Any player can swap hero at spawn any time — counter-picking is a core layer of play.
Ultimate combos
Zarya Grav + Genji Blade / Hanzo Storm Arrow are classic ult combos; teams synchronize ultimates for team-wipes.
Positional advantage
High ground + off-angles are decisive; Tank + Support positioning enables DPS output.
Ban phase (OWCS 2024+)
Both teams ban 1 hero per role each map at pro level; shapes hero pool decisively.
Overtime + tiebreak
Contested payload/objective extends overtime; time-bank system in Push mode.
Scoring
Map-per-map scoring — team winning majority of maps in best-of-5/7 wins the match.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Map won (objective completed or opponent stopped) | 1 map win |
| Series win | Match victory (BO5: 3 maps; BO7: 4 maps) |
Win condition · Best-of-5 maps: first to 3 map wins. Best-of-7: first to 4 map wins.

Cross-play across all platforms; PC standard for competitive.
Mouse + Keyboard
800-1600 DPI mouse; keyboard for movement + ability + ultimate keybinds.

240Hz+ monitor
OW2 rewards fast reactions especially for Widowmaker/Sombra/Tracer duels.
In-game heroes + role locks
40+ heroes: Tank (1 per team) / DPS (2 per team) / Support (2 per team). Role lock in ranked + OWCS.

Penalties & fouls
Penalties
Team-killing / griefing
Match report; potential competitive suspension.
Third-party software
Immediate ban (Blizzard anti-cheat).
Toxicity in voice/text
Chat mute + potential ranked suspension via Blizzard's report system.
Strategies
Track enemy ultimates
Winning teams call every enemy ultimate charge; commit to ultimate combos when opponents have none.
Bait ultimates then engage
Force opponent Support to burn Ana's Nano or Kiriko's Suzu, then engage with your own combo.
High-ground control
Every OW2 map has a decisive high-ground; Tank + Support position for it, then DPS shoot from it.
Swap for counter-picks
Losing a fight to Pharah? Swap to Ashe or Soldier. Losing to Reinhardt? Swap Tank to Sigma. Adaptability wins matches.

Frequently asked
What changed from Overwatch to Overwatch 2?+
The biggest change was 6v6 → 5v5 (one Tank per team instead of two), which made Tanks more central and matches faster. The game also went free-to-play with a battle pass model, added the Push mode + 3 new maps, and later added over a dozen new heroes. PvE story missions were promised at launch but were cancelled in 2023, causing controversy.
What happened to the Overwatch League?+
The Overwatch League (2018-2023) was Blizzard's city-franchised league (Boston Uprising, Seoul Dynasty, etc.). It folded after the 2023 season due to franchise economics and shifting Blizzard priorities. It was replaced by the Overwatch Championship Series (OWCS) in 2024 — an open-circuit format with regional stages feeding into a world championship.
Is Overwatch 2 still active as an esport?+
Yes — OWCS runs year-round with regional stages in North America, EMEA, and Asia, plus 2-3 major LAN events + an annual world championship. The scene is smaller than OWL's 2018 peak but healthier as an open circuit with organic team development.
