What is Pinochle?

Developed 19th-century USA from German BEZIQUE (Binokel) game via German immigrants. 2 PHASES: (1) MELDING — after cards dealt, players declare COMBINATIONS in hand: MARRIAGE (K+Q same suit = 20 pts), ROUND-HOUSE (marriages in all 4 suits = 240 pts), PINOCHLE (Jack of Diamonds + Queen of Spades = 40 pts), DOUBLE PINOCHLE (2 of each = 300 pts), ACES AROUND (4 aces different suits = 100 pts), etc. (2) TRICK-PLAY — hands played out following suit + trumping like whist. Points scored for: MELDS + TRICKS TAKEN (Ace, 10, K, Q = 1 pt each; 15 total in trick-play). PARTNERSHIP PINOCHLE (4 players, 2 partnerships) most common variant. Also SINGLE-HAND (2 players) + AUCTION (3-4 players bid for trump). VERY POPULAR in AMERICAN MIDWEST (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio) reflecting GERMAN IMMIGRANT HERITAGE. Cult game — many tournaments + online play at Trickster Cards, VIP Games. RELATED: BEZIQUE (French), BINOKEL (German original), SIXTY-SIX.

Frequently asked
What is Pinochle?+
TRICK-TAKING CARD GAME (48-card double deck of 9-A) developed 19th-century USA from GERMAN BEZIQUE/BINOKEL by German immigrants. 2 phases: MELDING (declare combinations for points) + TRICK-PLAY (like whist). Partnership Pinochle (4 players, 2 teams) most common. Very popular in AMERICAN MIDWEST (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio) reflecting German heritage. Cult game; still played in family + tournament settings.
How is Pinochle different from Bridge?+
BRIDGE = 52-card standard deck, complex BIDDING system, contract determined then play. PINOCHLE = 48-card DOUBLE deck (2× 9-A), MELDING phase + TRICK-PLAY (no bidding in Partnership variant). Both trick-taking but different mechanics. PINOCHLE simpler bidding; MORE MEMORIZATION due to double cards. Bridge global; Pinochle regional (USA + German-speaking Europe).
What is a Pinochle deck?+
48 CARDS: 2 copies each of 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace in all 4 suits = 48 total. Rank: A (high) → 10 → K → Q → J → 9 (low) — NOTE 10s OUTRANK KINGS + QUEENS (unusual). Can buy purpose-made deck ($5-10) OR combine 2 standard decks removing all 2s-8s. Some variants use 80-CARD DOUBLE-DECK PINOCHLE (2 pinochle decks combined) for even richer melding.
