What is Skat?
Skat is GERMAN 3-PLAYER TRICK-TAKING CARD GAME with COMPLEX BIDDING system. Invented ~1810 in ALTENBURG, THURINGIA (still Skat capital — Skatbrunnen fountain there). NATIONAL CARD GAME of GERMANY — millions play. INTERNATIONAL SKATORDNUNG (ISkO) official rules established 1927. Uses 32-CARD DECK (7-A × 4 suits). 3 PLAYERS active per hand (4th player sits out in 4-player rounds). SETUP: 10 cards each + 2 cards to 'SKAT' (KITTY). BIDDING: complex system — each contract worth points based on GAME × MULTIPLIERS (Matadors sequence). Highest bidder becomes DECLARER + plays alone vs 2 defenders. GAMES: (1) SUIT GAMES (Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds trumps + all Jacks always trump). (2) GRAND (only Jacks trump). (3) NULL (declarer must LOSE every trick; no trump). (4) NULL OUVERT (Null with cards face-up). Declarer chooses game + must fulfill CONTRACT (win 61+ pts of 120). SCORING scales with GAME VALUE × MATADORS × MULTIPLIERS — advanced players achieve 100+ pt hands. HAND game (no Skat) + OUVERT (hand shown) multiply scores. GERMAN SKATBUND (DSkV) has 30,000+ members; World Skat Federation international. Considered PINNACLE of German card gaming; skill-heavy + luck-minimized.

How it works
Objective
Declarer wins 61+ pts of 120 to fulfill contract; scoring based on game value × multipliers.
Rules
Basic rules
Deal 10 cards each + 2 to SKAT (kitty)
3 active players (Vorhand, Mittelhand, Hinterhand).
BIDDING: highest bidder = declarer
Complex system based on Game value × Matadors × Multipliers.
Declarer chooses SUIT GAME, GRAND, or NULL
Suit game: chosen suit + all Jacks trump. Grand: only Jacks trump. Null: no trump, must lose all tricks.
Declarer plays alone vs 2 defenders
Non-declarers work together but no formal partnership signals.
Declarer needs 61+ pts of 120 (Suit/Grand) OR 0 pts (Null)
Failure = declarer loses point value × 2.
SCORE = Game Value × Matadors × Multipliers
e.g., Clubs Grand with 4 Matadors × Schneider bonus = HUGE hand.
Scoring
Complex — Game Value × Matadors × Multipliers. Range: 18 (base) to 500+ (rare max hands).

Frequently asked
What is Skat?+
GERMAN 3-PLAYER TRICK-TAKING CARD GAME with COMPLEX BIDDING. Invented ~1810 in ALTENBURG, THURINGIA. NATIONAL CARD GAME OF GERMANY — millions play. 32-card deck; 10 cards each + 2 to SKAT (kitty). Highest bidder = DECLARER + plays alone vs 2 defenders. Games: SUIT (chosen trump + all Jacks), GRAND (only Jacks trump), NULL (must lose all tricks). Declarer needs 61+ pts of 120. Complex scoring: Game Value × Matadors × Multipliers. Deutscher Skatverband (1899) governs; 30,000+ registered players. Considered PINNACLE of German card gaming.
How complex is Skat compared to Bridge?+
SKAT MORE COMPLEX THAN BRIDGE in some ways — scoring calculations require memorizing MATADORS (Jacks + trump sequences) + MULTIPLIERS + GAME VALUES. Bidding is complex but 3-player (vs Bridge 4-player partnerships). SKAT SIMPLER in some ways — 32 cards vs 52; no partnership signaling conventions needed. Both are DEEP STRATEGY games. BRIDGE international competitive circuit larger; SKAT primarily German + adjacent countries. Serious players consider both worthy lifelong pursuits.
Why is Skat called 'Skat'?+
'SKAT' refers to the 2-CARD KITTY dealt separately from the 30 cards distributed to 3 players. Comes from ITALIAN 'SCARTO' (discard, cast-off). In Skat rules, the DECLARER (winning bidder) may pick up the Skat cards + discard 2 back (except in HAND games where Skat is unseen). Origin word reflects game's Italian card game ancestry (Tarocco derivatives). Also gives name to entire game. City of ALTENBURG in Thuringia has SKATBRUNNEN (Skat fountain) commemorating game's origins there ~1810.
