HELD #1 ON BOARDGAMEGEEK from 2003-2010 (7-YEAR REIGN — longest ever). Won DEUTSCHER SPIELE PREIS 2002 + INTERNATIONAL GAMERS AWARD 2002 + SPIEL DES JAHRES 2002 NOMINEE (barely lost). All-time top-25 game. Considered THE ARCHETYPAL EURO BOARD GAME + one of the most influential designs in board game history. 2020 REVISED EDITION removes colonists / slaves imagery, replaces with 'workers'.

What is Puerto Rico?

PUERTO RICO is a 2002 EURO-STYLE BOARD GAME designed by ANDREAS SEYFARTH + published by ALEA (Ravensburger) in Germany + RIO GRANDE GAMES in English. It is one of the most CELEBRATED + INFLUENTIAL EURO-STYLE BOARD GAMES EVER MADE — HELD THE BGG #1 RANK FROM 2003 TO 2010 (7-YEAR REIGN, longest of any game — later dethroned by Agricola in 2010). Established the ROLE-SELECTION MECHANIC (aka 'San Juan mechanic' or 'Puerto Rico mechanic') copied in dozens of subsequent games. THEME: 3-5 players are COLONIAL GOVERNORS in 18th-century PUERTO RICO under Spanish rule. Build plantations (corn, indigo, sugar, tobacco, coffee), man them with COLONISTS (originally the game used slave imagery — 2020 REVISED EDITION replaces with generic 'workers'), erect buildings + purple production buildings, produce + trade + ship goods to Europe (Spanish crown) for Victory Points. GAMEPLAY: On each round, players TAKE TURNS SELECTING ONE OF 7 ROLES from the central role pool. The role selected gives the picking player a BONUS + causes ALL PLAYERS to perform that role's action. Roles: (1) SETTLER — place a plantation on your player mat (picker gets choice + can take quarry); (2) MAYOR — receive colonists from ship + distribute among players (picker gets +1 colonist); (3) BUILDER — build one building (picker gets 1 doubloon discount); (4) CRAFTSMAN — produce goods based on plantations + factories (picker gets +1 good); (5) TRADER — sell 1 good to trading house for doubloons (picker gets +1 doubloon); (6) CAPTAIN — ship goods to Europe for VP (picker gets +1 VP); (7) PROSPECTOR — take 1 doubloon (no shared action; solo role). Once selected, that role gets a doubloon bonus next round if not picked. GAME END: when (a) VP tokens run out, (b) colonist supply depleted, or (c) any player fills all 12 building spaces. FINAL VP: shipping VP + building VP + large purple building bonuses (Guild Hall, Residence, Fortress, Customs House, City Hall). Highest wins. STRATEGIC DEPTH: perfect-information Euro; role picking creates tempo swings; 'give-and-take' mechanic — you help opponents when you pick, and vice versa. LEGACY: (1) SAN JUAN (2004) — card-game companion using same role mechanic; (2) PORT ROYALE — themed spinoff; (3) many games adopted role selection (Race for the Galaxy, Glory to Rome, etc.). 2020 REVISED (Puerto Rico 1897 / Puerto Rico 2nd Edition) removes racially charged 'colonist' imagery + adds AUTONOMOS + reworked roles. AWARDS: (a) DEUTSCHER SPIELE PREIS 2002 WINNER; (b) INTERNATIONAL GAMERS AWARD 2002 WINNER; (c) SPIEL DES JAHRES 2002 NOMINEE (lost to Villa Paletti); (d) BGG #1 GAME 2003-2010; (e) Origins Award nominee.

How it works

Objective

Score the most Victory Points from (a) SHIPPING goods to Europe + (b) BUILDINGS constructed + (c) end-game bonuses from LARGE PURPLE BUILDINGS.

Rules

Basic rules

  • Governor picks first, then rotates

Governor picks 1st role; play proceeds clockwise; each player selects 1 role per round.

  • Selected role = bonus for picker + action for ALL

All players take the role's action, but picker gets bonus.

  • 7 roles: Settler, Mayor, Builder, Craftsman, Trader, Captain, Prospector

    3-player uses 7 roles; 4-p uses 7 roles; 5-p uses 8 roles (extra Prospector).

  • Roles refill doubloon bonus if not picked

Unpicked roles gain +1 doubloon next round, tempting future pickers.

  • Round continues until each player picks 1 role

Then governor token passes; roles reset.

  • Game end: VP depleted OR colonists depleted OR any player fills 12 buildings

    Immediate scoring.

  • Scoring: shipping VP + building VP + large purple bonuses

    Highest wins.

Scoring

End-of-game: sum shipping VP (earned during Captain phases) + building VP (printed on each building) + LARGE PURPLE BUILDING bonuses (Guild Hall = 1-2 VP per purple building; Residence = 4-7 VP by plantation count; Fortress = 1 VP per 3 colonists; Customs House = 1 VP per 4 shipping VP; City Hall = 1 VP per purple building).

ActionPoints
Shipping VP (Captain phase)1 VP per barrel shipped to Europe
Building VP (printed 1-4 on each)1-4 VP each; large purple = 4 VP + endgame bonus
Guild Hall large purple1-2 VP per purple building end-game
Residence large purple4-7 VP by plantation count
Fortress large purple1 VP per 3 colonists in city
Customs House large purple1 VP per 4 shipping VP
City Hall large purple1 VP per purple building

Win condition · Highest total VP when game-end trigger fires. Tiebreak = most doubloons + goods remaining.

Strategies

  • Corn strategy (3-4 player)

Rush corn plantations + Captain frequently for shipping VP; classic aggressive strategy.

  • Building strategy (Guild Hall + Residence)

Build many purples + Guild Hall for endgame VP multiplier.

  • Coffee monopoly (5p)

Only 1-2 coffee plantations available; monopolize + trade for max doubloons.

  • Role denial

Don't pick roles that help opponents; sometimes take suboptimal role for you to deny opponents.

  • Craftsman for the picker bonus

Craftsman = +1 free good — huge tempo in trade/ship.

  • Endgame VP-trigger timing

Anticipate VP token depletion; ship max the round before to lock in position.

Frequently asked

What is Puerto Rico?+

2002 EURO-STYLE BOARD GAME by ANDREAS SEYFARTH (Alea/Rio Grande Games). 3-5 players are colonial governors in 18th-century Puerto Rico — settle plantations, build cities, produce + ship goods to Europe for VP. Uses ROLE SELECTION mechanic (each player picks 1 of 7 roles per turn, granting bonus + all-play action). HELD BGG #1 FROM 2003 TO 2010 (7-year reign, the longest ever). Considered THE archetypal Euro board game + one of the most influential designs in board game history.

What is the 2020 revised edition of Puerto Rico?+

PUERTO RICO 2ND EDITION (2020, Ravensburger) — also called PUERTO RICO 1897 — removes racially charged imagery (the original used 'colonist' pieces on 'colonist ship' widely criticized as slave imagery given the game's colonial-Caribbean setting). REVISED replaces with generic 'workers' + adds new AUTONOMOS role (independent workers) + rebalanced buildings + updated art. Considered the recommended version to buy in 2020s; original 2002 edition still valid for veterans.

Is Puerto Rico still worth playing in 2026?+

YES — still ranked BGG top-25 after 24 years. Its role-selection mechanic + perfect-information economic play remain FRESH + STRATEGIC. Newer euros are heavier or more thematic, but Puerto Rico's ELEGANCE + TIGHT INTERACTION (every role picked affects everyone) make it timeless. RECOMMENDATION: Buy 2020 REVISED EDITION (updated theme + rules). Play at 3-4 players (5p possible but longer). Board Game Arena has excellent free online implementation.
