Saddle Bronc Riding

Officially Saddle Bronc Riding (PRCA — Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association)

SIGNATURE RODEO EVENT — cowboy rides a BUCKING HORSE (SADDLE BRONC) for 8 SECONDS while using ONE-HANDED HOLD on a BRAIDED REIN (no double-hand allowed). JUDGES SCORE 0-100 (cowboy 0-25, horse 0-25 in each of 4 marks) — HORSE'S BUCKING PERFORMANCE weighs equally to cowboy's technique. Considered the CLASSIC 'CLASSICAL' rodeo event (vs. later bareback). PRCA sanctions ~600 rodeos/year USA + CANADA; NATIONAL FINALS RODEO (Las Vegas Dec) awards $6M+ total prize pool. How it works

Objective

STAY MOUNTED for 8 SECONDS + score MAX POINTS via technique + horse bucking performance.

Rules

Basic rules

  • 8 SECOND RULE: cowboy must stay MOUNTED until 8-sec buzzer sounds — if bucked off first, NO SCORE (buck-off)

    Signature 8-sec required stay.

  • MARK OUT RULE: cowboy MUST have BOTH SPURS above HORSE'S NECK when both front hooves first touch ground after chute exit; failure = NO SCORE

    Signature mark-out requirement.

  • ONE-HAND ONLY: cowboy holds BRAIDED HALTER REIN with ONE HAND (either hand); FREE hand cannot touch horse or self

    Signature one-hand rule (2-hand touch = DQ).

  • JUDGING: 2 judges each score 0-25 for COWBOY + 0-25 for HORSE; total from each judge is 0-50; combined 0-100

    Signature dual cowboy+horse scoring.

  • COWBOY POINTS: awarded for TECHNIQUE — SYNCHRONIZED SPURRING (spur strokes matching horse's bucks), RHYTHM, CONTROL

    Signature technique scoring.

  • HORSE POINTS: awarded for BUCKING PERFORMANCE — HIGH KICKS, TWISTING, PROTESTING; unpredictable BUCKING horses give higher scores

    Signature horse-scoring (as competitor).

  • SCORING BENCHMARKS: 60 = good, 70 = very good, 80+ = elite; 85+ world-class

    Signature scoring benchmarks.

  • DRAW: cowboy DRAWS RANDOM HORSE from lot — luck of the draw greatly influences scoring potential (great cowboy on dull horse = low score)

    Signature random horse draw.

Scoring

Judges score 0-100 combined; horse contributes ~50% of score; season points-total for World Championship.

Win condition · Highest score on ride; season leader wins World Championship + gold buckle.

Equipment

  • SADDLE BRONC: unbroken or lightly-broken RODEO HORSE (bred for bucking; Quarter Horse + Mustang common; often owned by rodeo stock contractors)

    Signature saddle bronc horse.

  • COWBOY SADDLE (specific 'bronc saddle' — narrow with high pommel + long stirrup fenders)

    Signature bronc saddle.

  • REIN: BRAIDED HALTER + REIN (~2 m long) — cowboy holds with 1 hand only

    Signature single braided rein.

  • FLANK STRAP: sheepskin-lined strap around horse's flanks (encourages bucking; MUST BE RELEASED after 8 sec)

    Signature flank strap.

  • COWBOY GEAR: hat, wrangler jeans, chaps, spurs (BLUNT ROWEL 1/4" max), boots

    Standard rodeo cowboy gear.

  • PROTECTIVE VEST + MOUTH GUARD (recommended, sometimes required)
