Teen Patti
Popular Indian gambling card game descended from the British 'Three Card Brag,' in which 3 cards are dealt to each of 3-7 players who bet blind or seen on the highest hand ranking (Trail > Pure Sequence > Sequence > Colour > Pair > High Card).
What is Teen Patti?
Teen Patti (Hindi: तीन पत्ती, 'three cards') is a gambling card game that originated in the Indian subcontinent and is popular throughout South Asia. It's a variation of the British card game 3-card Brag, with influences from Poker. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck; 3 cards are dealt face-down to each player. Players bet in rounds; each player must bet 'boot' (ante) to see cards. Betting continues until one player remains or a showdown. Best 3-card hand ranked from highest: Trail (three of a kind) > Pure Sequence (straight flush) > Sequence (straight) > Colour (flush) > Pair > High Card. Popular during Diwali festival in India, and now globally via online platforms (Adda52, RummyCircle, Junglee Rummy, Teen Patti Gold). Teen Patti is one of the most-played card games in India (100+ million players) with growing global expansion since 2010s.

How it works
Objective
Win the pot by having the best 3-card hand at showdown, OR by forcing all opponents to fold before showdown.
Match structure
Each player pays boot (ante). Dealer deals 3 cards face-down to each player. First betting round begins; players either see cards ('seen') or play blind. Continue betting until one player remains (all others fold) OR two players remain and pay 'chaal' for showdown. Winner takes pot.
Rules
Basic rules
Boot / Ante
Each player must pay a fixed 'boot' amount before deal to enter the hand.
3 cards dealt face-down
Each player receives 3 cards; no community cards.
Blind vs Seen play
Blind: bet without looking at cards (half normal bet). Seen: look at cards then bet (double amount).
Betting rounds
Play proceeds clockwise; each player calls (chaal), raises, or folds.
Blind cap
Player can only continue blind for max 4 rounds then must see cards.
Show / Show request
Two remaining players: one requests show; both reveal cards; higher hand wins pot.
Sideshow / Compromise (optional)
Seen player can request sideshow with previous seen player; loser folds.
Advanced rules
Hand rankings (high to low)
1) Trail/Trio (3 of a kind), 2) Pure Sequence (straight flush), 3) Sequence (straight), 4) Colour (flush), 5) Pair, 6) High Card.
Ace can be high or low in sequence
A-2-3 is valid straight; A-K-Q also valid.
Betting limits vary
Fixed limit: each bet = boot × X. Pot limit: max bet = current pot. No limit: any amount.
Chaal (call/raise) rules
Seen player bets 2× current amount minimum; blind player bets 1× minimum.
AK47 variation
Only A-K-4-7 cards playable; other cards are 'joker' — very different game.
999 variation
Closest hand total to 999 wins; different scoring system entirely.
Muflis / Lowest hand wins
Reversed ranking — worst hand wins.
Scoring
Best 3-card hand wins pot at showdown OR last player standing wins.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Trail / Trio (AAA highest, 222 lowest) | 1st — Beats all |
| Pure Sequence (A-K-Q♠, straight flush) | 2nd — Beats sequence + below |
| Sequence (A-K-Q of mixed suits, straight) | 3rd — Beats colour + below |
| Colour (all same suit non-consecutive) | 4th — Beats pair + high card |
| Pair (two of same rank) | 5th — Beats high card only |
| High Card (A-high beats K-high etc.) | 6th — Lowest ranking |
Win condition · Highest-ranked hand at showdown wins pot; ties (same rank hand) split pot.

Strategies
Blind play advantage early
Blind bets are half amount — cheap way to see how others bet; useful for tell reading.
Show only strong hands
Save 'show' request for strong hand — bluff-catcher play.
Fold weak hands early
3 cards means ~22% chance of pair or better; fold on high card only unless bluff-safe.
Track table dynamics
Tight players fold often; loose players call anything — adjust betting accordingly.
Position matters
Late position (last to act) has information advantage.

Is Teen Patti pure luck?+
Combination: ~60% luck (3 cards dealt), ~40% skill (betting decisions, bluffing, hand-reading). Long-term winners are skilled players; single hand mostly luck.
How to win at Teen Patti?+
1) Play tight — fold weak hands. 2) Use blind play early to gather info. 3) Read betting patterns — tight vs loose players. 4) Track pot odds — chase draws only if pot justifies. 5) Vary style — don't be predictable.
What is 'sideshow' in Teen Patti?+
Sideshow (a.k.a. compromise) is an optional feature: a seen player requests to compare cards with the previous seen player. Loser must fold. Requires table permission. Not always allowed in every version.
What are the hand probabilities?+
Trail: 0.24%. Pure Sequence (straight flush): 0.22%. Sequence (straight): 3.26%. Colour (flush): 4.96%. Pair: 16.94%. High Card: 74.38%. Most hands are High Card — betting strategy matters more than luck of the deal.
