Geocaching
Officially Geocaching (Global GPS Treasure Hunt)
Global outdoor treasure hunt using GPS coordinates — players find hidden containers ('caches') at specific coordinates worldwide. Started May 2000 (day after GPS Selective Availability turned off); 3+ million active caches; 8+ million users; every continent + underwater + space station.
What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is a global outdoor GPS-based treasure hunt. On MAY 3, 2000 — ONE DAY AFTER US government turned off Selective Availability (making civilian GPS accurate to 3-10m), Dave Ulmer hid first 'stash' in Oregon woods + posted coordinates online. Called 'The Great American GPS Stash Hunt.' Renamed 'geocaching' by Matt Stum days later. Geocaching.com launched September 2000 by Jeremy Irish (Groundspeak). Now: 3+ MILLION active caches, 8+ MILLION registered users, hidden on ALL 7 CONTINENTS + INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (astronaut Richard Garriott placed cache 2008) + underwater + Antarctica. GAMEPLAY: (1) Register on geocaching.com or app. (2) Search caches near you by coordinates. (3) Navigate via GPS to location. (4) Search for hidden container (usually camouflaged waterproof box: pill bottle, magnetic 'nano', ammo can, film canister). (5) Sign physical logbook + optionally trade small items. (6) Log find online. CACHE TYPES: Traditional (most common — container at coordinates), Multi (multiple stages), Mystery/Puzzle (solve puzzle to get coords), Letterbox Hybrid, EarthCache (geological education, no container), Virtual (no container, take photo), Wherigo (GPS + story game), Event (gathering). DIFFICULTY + TERRAIN: rated 1-5 stars each (D/T). Popular caches near landmarks, hiking trails, urban areas. TRACKABLES: coded items ('Travel Bugs', 'Geocoins') passed cache-to-cache; tracked online journey worldwide. MEGA-EVENTS: Geocaching HQ hosts annual Block Party (Seattle). Community events called 'CITO' (Cache In, Trash Out) combine geocaching with environmental cleanup. NIANTIC (Pokémon Go creator) originally launched by ex-Google team who noticed geocaching pattern. Free basic membership; Premium ~$30/year unlocks advanced caches.

How do I start geocaching?+
(1) Download free Geocaching.com app (iOS/Android). (2) Register. (3) App shows caches near you. (4) Filter by 'traditional' + D/T 1/1 rating (easiest). (5) Navigate to coordinates via app GPS. (6) Search 3-10m radius for camouflaged container. (7) Sign paper log with your username. (8) Optionally trade small items ('take one, leave one'). (9) Rehide EXACTLY as found. (10) Log find on app. Cost: $0 to start. Bring: phone, pen, small trinkets, flashlight.
What are trackables and Travel Bugs?+
TRACKABLES are coded items placed in caches; each finder moves to next cache; journey tracked worldwide on geocaching.com. TRAVEL BUGS = small metal tags with unique codes ($5-10 to buy). GEOCOINS = collectible metal coins with codes ($10-30). Attach to any small item. Set a GOAL (e.g., 'reach Australia' or 'visit all 50 states'). Watch it travel via geocacher hands over months/years. Some Travel Bugs have logged 100,000+ km worldwide. Great educational for kids following journey on map.
How is geocaching different from letterboxing?+
GEOCACHING (2000+, GPS-based): use GPS coordinates to find caches; sign logbook + log online; global platform (geocaching.com). LETTERBOXING (older, clue-based): navigate via written CLUES (e.g., 'walk 100 paces north from oak tree'); stamp custom personal STAMPS in shared logbook; British origin 1854 Dartmoor. HYBRID CACHES exist (Letterbox Hybrid combines both). Letterboxing more artistic (custom stamps); geocaching more technical (GPS + technology). Both outdoor hidden-object hunting; geocaching has 100× more participants.
Is geocaching free?+
MOSTLY FREE. FREE: basic geocaching.com account, app download, finding + logging traditional caches (~85% of all caches). $30/YEAR PREMIUM: access to Premium-only caches (~15%), pocket queries (bulk download), enhanced statistics, offline maps. Optional purchases: Travel Bugs $5-10, Geocoins $10-30, handheld GPS $80-300, printed guidebooks $10-30. Most people play free forever; Premium worth it if you find 200+ caches/year. Groundspeak (parent company) also sells geocaching-branded merchandise.
