What is Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game?
MIDDLE-EARTH STRATEGY BATTLE GAME (MESBG) is a TABLETOP MINIATURE WARGAME published by GAMES WORKSHOP based on J.R.R. Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS + THE HOBBIT novels + Peter Jackson's film trilogies. Originally released 2001 alongside Fellowship of the Ring film as THE LORD OF THE RINGS STRATEGY BATTLE GAME; renamed MIDDLE-EARTH STRATEGY BATTLE GAME (MESBG) in 2018 following comprehensive rules overhaul. Considered THE BEST HISTORICAL-ADJACENT MINIATURE WARGAME + GAMES WORKSHOP'S MOST HISTORICALLY BALANCED game (tighter rules than Warhammer 40K or Fantasy Battle). GAMEPLAY: 2 players field armies of GOOD FACTIONS (Kingdoms of Men — Rohan / Gondor / Númenór / Rangers / Dale / Erebor; Elves — Rivendell / Lothlórien / Woodland Realm / Grey Havens; Dwarves — Erebor / Iron Hills / Moria refugees; Fellowship of the Ring; Isengard rebels; Ents of Fangorn) vs EVIL FACTIONS (Mordor — Orcs of Mordor / Nazgûl / Sauron himself; Isengard — Uruk-hai / Wildmen of Dunland; Angmar — Wight-Kings / Barrow-wights; Moria — Goblins of Moria / Balrog; Easterlings + Khand; Corsairs of Umbar; Harad + Serpent Horde; Goblin Town). Armies include named HEROES (Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Frodo, Gandalf, Denethor, Théoden, Éowyn on Good; Sauron, Witch-King, Saruman, Lurtz, Gothmog, Grishnákh, Shelob on Evil) + WARRIORS (Rohirrim, Gondorian soldiers, Uruk-hai, Orcs, Corsairs, etc.). GAMEPLAY: Uses ALTERNATING PRIORITY — at start of each turn, both roll off for PRIORITY; winner activates all their models in preferred order, then opponent activates theirs (variant on I-go-you-go). Each model activates twice per turn — MOVE + SHOOT + FIGHT. COMBAT: Melee = decisive one-side-wins; roll off Duel dice (attacker + defender each roll D6 + Fight value); higher = wins fight + rolls damage; ties = defender wins. Wound rolls determine kills. HEROIC ACTIONS — heroes with WILL POINTS can perform Heroic Move / Heroic Combat / Heroic Shoot / Heroic Strike / Heroic Defense — giving huge tactical + narrative flexibility. GAME LENGTH: 60-120 min typical. MISSIONS: Scenarios include Meeting Engagement, Domination, Reconnoitre, Contest of Champions, Assassination, Storm the Camp, Hold Ground, Divide + Conquer. RELEASE HISTORY: (a) LORD OF THE RINGS SBG (2001, launched with Fellowship of the Ring film release); (b) TWO TOWERS + RETURN OF THE KING expansions (2002-2003); (c) BATTLE OF THE PELENNOR FIELDS (2007); (d) THE HOBBIT SBG (2012-2014, alongside Hobbit film trilogy); (e) MESBG rebrand + rules overhaul 2018; (f) 2024 updated rulebooks. COMPETITIVE: (a) GW Warhammer World MESBG events; (b) THE ONE TOURNAMENT (major USA event); (c) UK MASTERS + EU MASTERS + AUS NATS; (d) MESBG podcasts: Green Dragon Podcast, Trust Team, Rings of Middle-earth. Considered a niche but PASSIONATE GLOBAL community. Widely considered GW'S TIGHTEST-BALANCED ruleset with strong tournament scene + accessible entry price.

How it works
Objective
Achieve scenario-specific victory: Meeting Engagement (destroy more of opponent), Domination (control terrain), Reconnoitre (get models off enemy edge), Contest of Champions (heroic kills), Assassination (kill enemy leader), etc.
Rules
Basic rules
Roll off priority; winner activates models first
Alternating priority — one side goes fully before the other.
Each model: Move + Shoot + Fight per turn
3-action structure per model.
Combat: Duel roll (D6 + Fight vs opponent D6 + Fight)
Higher = wins fight; ties = defender wins; roll damage after.
Heroic Actions: Will points fuel Heroic Move/Combat/Shoot/Strike/Defense
Heroes with Will can override normal turn order.
Might points for +1 to any roll
Heroes have limited Might pool; save for critical moments.
Fate points prevent wounds
Heroes' final defense against death.
Break tests when army takes 50% casualties
Failing = FLEEING; game ends soon.
Scoring
Score based on specific scenario objectives. Most common: model losses + objective control + hero survival + break-point achievements.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Enemy models killed | Contributes to scenario victory conditions |
| Objective/zone controlled | Varies per scenario (typically win condition) |
| Enemy hero killed | Bonus VP + morale swing |
| Break test failed by opponent | Signals impending end + potential victory |
Win condition · Scenario-specific — Meeting Engagement = win by 50%+ casualty differential; Domination = control 2+ of 5 zones; others vary.

Strategies
Priority is EVERYTHING
Winning priority + Heroic Move = choose combat matchups; huge advantage.
Heroic Combat chains
One Heroic Combat lets hero fight + move again — devastating pursuit + assassination combos.
Might/Will/Fate economy
Limited resources; save Might for critical +1s + Will for Heroic Moves + Fate for hero deaths.
Formation + support
Attacking a model with 2 friends adds attacks to duel roll; positioning key.
Break test management
Play conservatively near break point; retreating models = won't fight.
Scenario-first tactics
Read scenario carefully; sometimes losing models is fine if you achieve objective.

Frequently asked
What is Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game?+
GAMES WORKSHOP'S TABLETOP MINIATURE WARGAME (2001, MESBG rebrand 2018) based on THE LORD OF THE RINGS + THE HOBBIT films. 2 players field armies of GOOD (Rohan, Gondor, Elves, Dwarves, Fellowship) vs EVIL (Mordor, Isengard, Angmar, Moria, Easterlings). Uses ALTERNATE PRIORITY + Heroic Actions + Duel-based combat. Considered THE BEST HISTORICAL-ADJACENT MINIATURE WARGAME + GW'S TIGHTEST-BALANCED ruleset. 60-120 min per game; deep tournament + narrative scene.
How is MESBG different from Warhammer Fantasy / The Old World?+
BOTH are GW fantasy games but VERY DIFFERENT. MESBG = SKIRMISH-TO-SMALL-MASS scale (10-50 models per side), TIGHT BALANCE, film-inspired characters + factions, alternating priority + Heroic Actions. WARHAMMER: THE OLD WORLD = MASS-BATTLE rank-and-file (50-200 models per side), unique Warhammer setting, longer games, magic + character phases. MESBG is more accessible + more tightly balanced; TOW is deeper + more traditional wargame experience.
Is Middle-earth SBG still supported by GW?+
YES — MESBG has ONGOING SUPPORT from GW's Specialist Games team. Recent releases: 2024 updated rulebooks, ongoing new hero + army packs, Warhammer World MESBG events. Community is NICHE but PASSIONATE. Product still stocked at GW stores globally. Considered a stable long-term investment for tabletop fans. Tournament scene is smaller than 40K but growing.
