What is Pandemic Legacy: Season 1?
PANDEMIC LEGACY: SEASON 1 is a REVOLUTIONARY LEGACY GAME co-designed by MATT LEACOCK (creator of PANDEMIC, 2008) + ROB DAVIAU (inventor of the LEGACY GAME concept via RISK LEGACY 2011). Published by Z-MAN GAMES (2015). Cooperative disease-cure gameplay based on the ORIGINAL PANDEMIC (2008) but transformed with LEGACY MECHANICS — the game changes PERMANENTLY based on player choices: stickers on the board, torn-up cards, CHARACTER DEATHS, escalating story campaign across 12 IN-GAME MONTHS. HELD BOARDGAMEGEEK #1 FOR 3+ YEARS (2016-2019); still top-5 in 2026 (only recently displaced by Gloomhaven, Frosthaven, Brass: Birmingham). Widely considered THE GREATEST LEGACY GAME EVER + ONE OF THE BEST BOARD GAMES OF ALL TIME. Also REVOLUTIONIZED board game design as a whole — inspired dozens of legacy + campaign games (Charterstone, Gloomhaven, SeaFall, Aftermath, Betrayal Legacy, dozens more). GAMEPLAY: Same base as Pandemic — 4 diseases spreading across world; players cooperate to cure them. Each player takes a CHARACTER (Medic, Scientist, Dispatcher, Researcher, etc.); each turn = 4 actions (move, treat disease, share knowledge, build research station, discover cure); after actions, DRAW 2 player cards then INFECT cities. LEGACY MECHANICS: (a) 12 IN-GAME MONTHS = 12-24 REAL SESSIONS; (b) Story unfolds via SEALED DOSSIERS opened when triggers activate; (c) STICKERS applied to board permanently (research stations, connections, upgrades, disease markers); (d) CARDS ARE TORN UP (permanently removed from game); (e) CHARACTERS CAN DIE (with in-story burial + memorial sticker); (f) NEW RULES REVEALED progressively via sealed envelopes; (g) ESCALATING DIFFICULTY as story reveals mutations + collapse of civilization. STORY SPOILER-FREE OVERVIEW: Diseases become more virulent; some become UNTREATABLE; new mechanics reveal what's REALLY happening in the world. Each session either WIN (advance month) or LOSE (still advance month, but with penalties). Complete 12 months = end of campaign. CAMPAIGN OUTCOMES: Multiple possible endings based on player choices + performance. Some campaigns end tragically; some triumphantly. Each group's campaign is UNIQUE. RECEPTION: Held BGG #1 for 3+ years (2016-2019); Golden Geek Best Board Game 2016; Kennerspiel des Jahres 2016 nominee; Deutscher Spiele Preis 2017 winner; Meeples Choice Award; consistently on 'best games ever' lists. Named 'The Game That Broke My Group' due to intensity. SEQUELS: SEASON 2 (2017) — POST-apocalyptic setting, connected story; SEASON 0 (2020) — Cold War era prequel. All 3 seasons designed as standalone campaigns.

Save character skills for critical moments
Once-per-game abilities matter.

Frequently asked
What is Pandemic Legacy: Season 1?+
REVOLUTIONARY LEGACY GAME (2015) by Matt Leacock + Rob Daviau, published by Z-Man Games. Cooperative disease-cure game based on Pandemic (2008) but with LEGACY MECHANICS — permanent stickers on board, torn cards, character deaths, escalating story across 12 in-game months. Which Pandemic Legacy season should I play first?+
PLAY SEASON 1 FIRST. Each season is technically STANDALONE but Season 2 references events from Season 1 + Season 0 is a PREQUEL. Recommended order: (1) SEASON 1 — original, best-known, most iconic; (2) SEASON 2 — post-apocalyptic setting, follows Season 1 story; (3) SEASON 0 — Cold War prequel, chronologically first. All 3 are excellent but Season 1 is the essential starting point + widely considered the best.
Can I replay Pandemic Legacy after finishing?+
NO — the game is DESIGNED FOR ONE COMPLETE PLAYTHROUGH. Board is permanently altered by stickers, cards are torn up, characters die permanently, sealed content is opened. AFTER CAMPAIGN, the game becomes a UNIQUE ARTIFACT of your group's experience. Some sell/give the used copy; some keep it as a keepsake. There is NO reset button. This 'unrepeatable' quality is CORE to the emotional experience.
