Officially RC Aircraft Racing (FAI F3/F5 Classes)

COMPETITIVE RADIO-CONTROLLED AIRPLANE RACING around fixed PYLON courses on the ground — pilots stand at flight-line while their PLANES race at 300+ km/h at low altitude. 3 PYLON course (triangular) is standard. FAI sanctioned as F3D (200 mph pylon), Q500 (400 cid 4-stroke class), Q40 (40 cid class); popular USA + EU + JP. Contested at FAI World Championships biennial since 1971. Distinct from DRONE RACING (see also) — RC racing uses fixed-wing propeller aircraft. Requires 3-4 person teams (pilot, caller, mechanic).

Basic rules

  • COURSE: TRIANGULAR 3-pylon layout — 180 m long × 40 m wide; planes fly at ~5-15 m altitude around pylons

    Signature 3-pylon course.

  • HEAT: 3-4 planes race simultaneously; complete 10 LAPS (~1.8 km); fastest wins heat

    Signature 10-lap heat format.

  • PILOT stands at PYLON 1 with transmitter; CALLER stands with pilot + calls out traffic + turn timing; MECHANIC pre-launches + prepares plane between heats

    Signature 3-role team.

  • CUT (missing pylon): 1-second PENALTY per cut; too many cuts → disqualification

  • TAKEOFF from ground (grass runway or dolly); LANDING mandatory + on runway (some classes)
