MULTI-STAGE ENDURANCE SPORT combining OPEN-WATER SWIMMING + TRAIL RUNNING in continuous alternation — athletes race from island to island (or lake to lake) in a WETSUIT + TRAIL SHOES kept ON THROUGHOUT (no transition zones). Signature format is 2-PERSON TEAM tethered by short rope. Invented 2006 in STOCKHOLM ARCHIPELAGO by 4 Swedish friends after tavern bet; ÖTILLÖ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP annual (65 km, 10 km swim + 55 km trail, 20+ islands). ~10K participants globally in 200+ SwimRun races.

Basic rules
CONTINUOUS FORMAT: NO TRANSITION zones — athletes keep wetsuit + shoes on throughout swim + run
Signature no-transition format.
TEAM FORMAT: 2-PERSON TEAMS (male, female, or mixed) tethered with short rope for safety + drafting
Signature 2-person team format.
TEAMMATES must FINISH TOGETHER — no more than 10m gap allowed
Signature stay-together rule.
MULTIPLE SWIM SEGMENTS (100m to 3km each) + MULTIPLE RUN SEGMENTS (200m to 8km each)
