GENERAL TERM for search activities where PARTICIPANTS locate HIDDEN OBJECTS ('TREASURE') via CLUES / RIDDLES / MAPS. Ranges from CHILDREN'S BIRTHDAY-PARTY hunts to LARGE REAL-WORLD treasure hunts with actual valuable prizes buried in the real world. Signature real-world hunts: MASQUERADE (Kit Williams 1979 UK, golden hare buried until 1982), FORREST FENN TREASURE (2010-2020 Rocky Mountains, $2M chest, found by Jack Stuef), 'BEALE CIPHERS' (Virginia, unsolved), 'THUNDER BAY GOLD HUNT'. ARMCHAIR variants: solve puzzles from book/website alone (no physical hunt). Distinct from GEOCACHING (GPS-based) + SCAVENGER HUNTS (multi-item lists).

Rules

Basic rules

  • CLUES: riddles, ciphers, maps, cryptic poems (Fenn), pictures (Masquerade)

    Signature clue types.

  • SEARCHERS interpret clues + physically locate treasure (or solve armchair-only)

    Signature interpret + locate.

  • FIRST FINDER receives treasure (usually valuable — hare, gold, cash)

    Signature first-finder wins.

  • TIME LIMIT sometimes imposed (Fenn had none until announced found)

    Signature time limits vary.

  • PHYSICAL RISK in wilderness hunts (Fenn hunt caused 5 deaths in Rockies)
