What is Mafia?

Mafia (also called WEREWOLF in most European + newer versions) is a classic SOCIAL DEDUCTION party game invented 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff, Moscow University psychology professor + student — originally used to teach students about deception + persuasion + group psychology. Rules: 7-30+ players; secretly assigned roles by narrator (moderator): most are INNOCENTS (Villagers / Townspeople), few are MAFIA (Werewolves). Special roles exist: DOCTOR (protects one player each night), DETECTIVE / SEER (learns one player's role each night), MEDIUM (talks to dead), CUPID (links 2 players' fates), etc. Game alternates NIGHT + DAY phases: NIGHT — everyone 'closes eyes'; Mafia opens eyes to silently agree who to 'kill'; Doctor opens eyes to save; Detective learns identity. DAY — everyone opens; narrator announces death; group discusses suspicions; votes to LYNCH one suspected Mafia. Cycle repeats. INNOCENTS WIN if all Mafia eliminated. MAFIA WINS if Mafia numbers equal remaining Innocents. Requires 30-90 minutes; huge social/psychological depth in reading + persuading + deceiving. Global phenomenon: standard college dorm activity, workplace icebreaker, Silicon Valley + creative retreats, viral YouTube gaming (Rec Room, Among Us digital variants), Netflix Turkish 'Mafia' series (2022). Werewolf variant (created 1997 by Andrew Plotkin) commercialized as 'The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow' board game (2001) — sold 5M+ copies. Digital versions: Town of Salem, Werewolf Online, Among Us (2018), Werewolves Within (VR). Estimated 200+ million players globally; strong competitive scene + streaming culture.

How it works

Objective

INNOCENTS: identify + eliminate all Mafia by day voting. MAFIA: eliminate Innocents until Mafia numbers equal remaining Innocents (game over).

Match structure

Moderator assigns roles secretly. Alternating NIGHT + DAY phases. Night: Mafia kills one player; special roles act. Day: group discusses + votes to lynch one suspected Mafia. Game continues until win condition met.

Rules

Basic rules

  • Moderator assigns secret roles

Narrator distributes role cards or whispers roles: majority INNOCENTS; few MAFIA; optional special roles (Doctor, Detective).

  • NIGHT phase — Mafia acts

Everyone 'closes eyes'. Mafia opens eyes silently, points to select one victim, then closes. Doctor opens + selects one player to save. Detective opens + points to one player; moderator confirms Mafia/Innocent status.

  • Moderator announces death

Everyone opens eyes. Moderator announces who was killed (unless Doctor saved them — no death that night).

  • DAY phase — discussion + accusation

Living players discuss suspicions freely. Anyone can accuse others. Discussion 5-10 minutes typical.

  • DAY phase — vote to lynch

Group votes on who to eliminate (majority or plurality). Lynched player reveals role + is out of game.

  • Repeat night/day cycles

Continue alternating phases until win condition met.

  • INNOCENTS win: all Mafia eliminated

Innocents victory when no Mafia remain.

  • MAFIA win: numbers equal

Mafia victory when their count equals or exceeds Innocents (game over via majority).

Advanced rules

  • Doctor role

Each night, doctor secretly picks one player to save — if Mafia targets that player, no death occurs. Some rules: cannot save same player twice consecutively.

  • Detective / Seer role

Each night, detective points to one player; moderator silently confirms if Mafia or Innocent. Detective must survive to share information subtly during day.

  • Medium role

Can communicate with dead players silently; learns their roles.

  • Cupid role

First night, Cupid links 2 players — if one dies, both die (love bond).

  • Little Girl role (Werewolf variant)

Can peek during night phase; caught peeking = Mafia can kill her instead of chosen target.

  • Village Idiot / Fool

Wins if lynched by group; opposes both sides.

  • Serial Killer role

Third faction — kills alone each night; wins if last standing.

  • Vote tally rules

Some rules: tied votes = no lynching that day; others: coin flip or player choice.

  • Dead players silent

Once eliminated, cannot speak or influence living. Watching + smiling is metagame.

  • Time limits

Some formal versions limit discussion + voting time to prevent stalling.

  • Silent Mafia signaling

During night phase, Mafia may only communicate via silent gestures — quirk of the format.

  • First Night rule

In some variants: Mafia does NOT kill on first night — allows Detective + Doctor to start acting.

Dimensions

Circle formation of players; requires low light + open discussion space.

Living room circle, classroom, camp fire ring, dorm room, conference table. Players seated in circle where everyone can see everyone. Central 'moderator' position for narrator.

Equipment

  • Role cards (or verbal assignment)

Physical cards distributed showing each player's role — Mafia, Innocent, Doctor, Detective, etc. Home game: playing cards work (aces = Mafia, jacks = Doctor, etc.).

  • Moderator / Narrator

One non-player runs the game — assigns roles, calls phases, tracks events, announces deaths.

  • Optional: Commercial version

'Werewolves of Miller's Hollow' board game ($15-25); 'Ultimate Werewolf' ($20-30) with many roles.

  • Optional: Digital variants

Among Us (mobile/PC), Town of Salem, Werewolf Online, Werewolves Within (VR).

Officiating

Moderator is essential — non-player who runs game, announces phases, tracks events, ensures fair play. Moderator's skill dramatically affects game quality.

  • Moderator / Narrator (essential — assigns roles + runs phases + tracks events)

Strategies

  • For Mafia — blend in as Innocent

Actively participate in discussions; accuse others credibly; don't be too silent or too aggressive.

  • For Mafia — coordinate kills

During night, silently agree on target — usually eliminating Doctor or Detective first if identified.

  • For Innocents — observe voting patterns

Mafia often protects fellow Mafia in votes; note who defends whom.

  • For Detective — subtle reveal timing

If certain player is Mafia, reveal cautiously — outing self makes you target for next night.

  • For Doctor — save yourself sometimes

Doctor should occasionally self-heal (if rules allow); vulnerable role.

  • For everyone — control emotion

Don't visibly react when your role is targeted or you learn info; maintain neutral demeanor.

  • For Innocents — group think caution

Bandwagon voting can lynch wrong player; consider evidence carefully.

  • For Mafia — early misdirection

First-day discussions: gently steer suspicion to weak defensive player; establish yourself as trustworthy.

  • Meta-game awareness

Regular players know each other's tells + tendencies; adapt strategy per group's meta.

  • Silent communication (Mafia)

During night, Mafia agree kills via subtle finger points or head nods — moderator ensures no vocal comms.

Frequently asked

How do you play Mafia?+

Moderator secretly assigns each player as MAFIA (few) or INNOCENT (many); optional special roles (Doctor, Detective). Game alternates NIGHT + DAY. NIGHT: everyone closes eyes; Mafia opens + silently agrees on kill target; Doctor saves one player; Detective learns one player's identity. DAY: everyone opens; moderator announces death (unless saved); group discusses suspicions; votes to LYNCH one player (usually accused Mafia). Repeat. INNOCENTS win by eliminating all Mafia. MAFIA wins by reaching numerical parity with Innocents. 7-30 players; 30-90 min game. Requires moderator + social discussion.

Where does Mafia come from?+

Invented 1986 in Moscow, USSR by DIMITRY DAVIDOFF — psychology professor + student at Moscow State University. Originally designed as EDUCATIONAL EXPERIMENT teaching students about deception, persuasion, group dynamics, mob psychology. Spread through Soviet + then post-Soviet universities in 1990s; brought west by academics + Russian émigrés. Andrew Plotkin created WEREWOLF variant 1997 (thematic shift from urban to rural). Commercial 'Werewolves of Miller's Hollow' board game 2001 (France, Lui-Meme Editions). Now global — 200M+ estimated players; digital Among Us (2018) sold 500M downloads; Netflix Turkish 'Mafia' series (2022).

What are the special roles?+

MAFIA / WEREWOLF (evil minority — kills each night). INNOCENT / VILLAGER (good majority — deduces + votes lynch). DOCTOR (saves one player each night from Mafia). DETECTIVE / SEER (learns one player's identity each night). MEDIUM (talks to dead). CUPID (links 2 players' fates first night). LITTLE GIRL (Werewolf variant — can peek at night; risky). VILLAGE IDIOT / FOOL (wins if lynched). SERIAL KILLER (third faction — kills alone). HUNTER (revenge kill when lynched). WITCH (has healing + poison potions). More elaborate variants (Blood on the Clocktower) have 50+ roles. Special roles add strategic complexity + narrative drama.

What's the difference between Mafia and Werewolf?+

Same core game with different THEMES + slight rule variations. MAFIA (1986 Russian original): Urban theme, Italian mob criminals, city setting, formal 'Mafia' term. WEREWOLF (1997 Andrew Plotkin variant): Rural theme, medieval village, werewolves stalking, folk horror atmosphere. Commercial 'Werewolves of Miller's Hollow' popularized Werewolf naming globally. Some variants: Mafia has Doctor + Detective; Werewolf adds Seer (equivalent) + Cupid + Little Girl + Witch + Hunter. Modern gamers often use terms interchangeably. Digital Among Us (2018) reframes as space Crewmates + Impostors — same mechanic, sci-fi theme.

Is Among Us the same as Mafia?+

Yes — Among Us is a DIGITAL Mafia variant. Innersloth released 2018; became massive hit November 2020 during COVID pandemic (500M monthly players). MECHANICS SAME: 4-15 players; some are IMPOSTORS (Mafia), rest are CREWMATES (Innocents). Impostors kill Crewmates + sabotage; Crewmates do tasks + vote out Impostors during emergency meetings. INNOVATIONS: (a) mini-game 'tasks' provide evidence of innocence, (b) vents allow Impostor stealth movement, (c) 2D visualization of players + spaces. Same core social deduction gameplay; adapted for smartphone + gaming platforms + streaming. Massively expanded Mafia's global reach.

How does moderating work?+

MODERATOR (also 'Narrator' or 'Storyteller') is essential non-player role. Responsibilities: (1) SECRETLY ASSIGN roles to all players. (2) CALL PHASES ('Everyone close eyes... Mafia open eyes...'). (3) TRACK events during night (which player killed, saved, investigated). (4) ANNOUNCE deaths + role reveals. (5) MANAGE discussion + voting during day. (6) ENFORCE rules + fair play. (7) NARRATE dramatically for atmosphere. Good moderators dramatically improve game experience — pacing, tension, fairness. Bad moderators make games chaotic + confusing. Moderating is skill — good ones are highly sought at game nights + camps.
