What is Spyfall?
Spyfall is AWARD-WINNING SOCIAL DEDUCTION PARTY GAME — designed by ALEXANDR USHAN, published in RUSSIA 2014 (Hobbyworld) + Netherlands 2015 (Cryptozoic Entertainment English release). Won multiple 'Best Party Game' awards + praised by tabletop reviewers as one of best party games ever. GAMEPLAY: 3-8 players. Deck of LOCATION CARDS (30+ locations: hospital, airplane, theater, submarine, restaurant, etc.). At round start: (1) EACH PLAYER SECRETLY RECEIVES a LOCATION CARD showing the LOCATION + player's specific ROLE at that location (e.g., 'THEATER — Musician' or 'HOSPITAL — Nurse'). (2) EXCEPT ONE PLAYER: the SPY. Spy receives card saying 'SPY' — has NO knowledge of location. (3) 8-MINUTE TIMER starts. (4) Players take turns ASKING EACH OTHER QUESTIONS designed to REVEAL knowledge of location without giving it away. Non-spy players want to identify spy; spy wants to figure out location + blend in. (5) At any point during round, ANY PLAYER can ACCUSE another of being spy. If accusation vote unanimous + correct, non-spy players win + accused spy pays. If wrong, everyone loses. (6) When timer ends OR spy is accused correctly, SPY may GUESS the location — if correct, spy wins. Round scoring: SPY wins = 4 pts (correct guess) OR 2 pts (accuse-and-be-wrong); non-spy players win = 1 pt each. GAME OVER at pre-set score threshold. Sold 500,000+ copies globally. Direct sequels: SPYFALL 2 (2017 with up to 12 players + 2 spies), SPYFALL AT SEA (2020 nautical themed). Beloved for CREATIVE PARTY GAME MECHANIC — combines deduction, deception, quick thinking, social reading.

How it works
Objective
As NON-SPY: identify spy. As SPY: guess location or evade detection.
Rules
Basic rules
3-8 players; deck of 30+ LOCATION CARDS
Each location has 8 unique roles printed.
Everyone secretly gets same LOCATION card + their unique ROLE
EXCEPT one player who gets 'SPY' card.
8-MINUTE TIMER starts
Timer runs whole round.
Take turns ASKING QUESTIONS to other players about location knowledge
Non-spies want to expose spy; spy wants to reveal location + blend in.
Questions must be VAGUE ENOUGH not to reveal location outright
e.g., 'How comfortable are you here?' vs 'What color are the sheets?'
ANY PLAYER can ACCUSE another of being spy at any time (requires unanimous vote)
If correct: non-spies win. If wrong: everyone loses that round.
When timer ends OR spy is accused correctly, SPY may GUESS location
If spy guesses correctly = spy wins.
Scoring
SPY wins: 4 pts (correct guess) or 2 pts (accuse-and-be-wrong). Non-spy players win: 1 pt each.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Spy guesses location correctly (after being accused) | Spy: 4 pts |
| Spy revealed but doesn't guess (or guesses wrong) | Non-spies: 1 pt each |
| Player wrongly accused of being spy (spy escapes detection) | Spy: 2 pts |
| Game to pre-set score threshold (~10 pts) | Game winner |

Ask VAGUE questions revealing location knowledge without spoiling
e.g., 'Is it dangerous here?' vs 'Is it a warzone?'
As SPY: give VAGUE answers reflecting many possible locations
Buy time to figure out actual location.
PAY ATTENTION to who asks vague questions — could be spy stalling
Non-spy questions typically more specific.
MEMORIZE 30+ locations in deck
Elite play knows role list per location.
TIME PRESSURE — spy benefits from timer running out
Non-spies want quick accurate accusation.

Frequently asked
What is Spyfall?+
AWARD-WINNING SOCIAL DEDUCTION PARTY GAME — Alexandr Ushan, Russia 2014. 3-8 players secretly assigned same LOCATION card except ONE PLAYER who is SPY. 8-minute timer; players ask each other questions revealing location knowledge without spoiling it. Non-spies want to identify spy; spy wants to figure out location + blend in. Beloved for CREATIVE mechanic combining deduction, deception, quick thinking. Sold 500,000+ copies globally. Sequels: Spyfall 2 (2017), Spyfall at Sea (2020). Considered one of best modern party games.
How is Spyfall different from Mafia?+
MAFIA (aka Werewolf, 1986 Russian origin) has PLAYERS ROLE-ASSIGNED with different alignments (mafia, villagers, doctor, detective) trying to identify + eliminate opposite side across MULTIPLE DAY/NIGHT PHASES. Very traditional deduction game. SPYFALL (2014) has 1 SPY vs GROUP-KNOWING players trying to identify spy WITHIN 8-MINUTE TIMER of location-related questioning. Faster + more focused than Mafia. SPYFALL's mechanic of asking vague questions to reveal location without spoiling is UNIQUE + creative. Both social deduction; different pacing + rules. Spyfall better for casual groups + shorter sessions; Mafia better for longer strategy nights.
Is Spyfall a competitive game?+
NOT COMPETITIVELY organized — no professional Spyfall circuit or Spyfall Championship. Purely social + recreational. However, played at TABLETOP CONVENTIONS (Gen Con, Origins, PAX) sometimes as featured tournament for fun bragging rights. Some board game cafés + hobby stores host casual events. Sold 500,000+ copies makes it POPULAR game but not competitive esport. Modern app versions (Spyfall.app + others) allow online play with distant friends. Considered ONE OF BEST PARTY GAMES — critically acclaimed but sold via retail rather than tournament ecosystem.
