What is Twilight Struggle?
TWILIGHT STRUGGLE is the LEGENDARY 2-PLAYER CARD-DRIVEN COLD WAR WARGAME designed by ANANDA GUPTA + JASON MATTHEWS + published by GMT Games in 2005. Simulates the 1945-1989 US vs USSR global proxy conflict across 3 phases (Early War 1945-1961, Mid War 1962-1978, Late War 1979-1989). CARD-DRIVEN ACTION: each turn, players hold ~8 cards; can play each card for OPERATIONS (Ops Value used for Influence, Coup, Realignment, Space Race) OR trigger the card's EVENT (which may benefit opponent if opponent's card!). This DILEMMA of playing your enemy's card for ops but triggering their event = TWILIGHT STRUGGLE's genius. Cards represent HISTORICAL EVENTS: Marshall Plan, De Gaulle Leads France, NATO, Warsaw Pact, Suez Crisis, Cuban Missile Crisis, Bay of Pigs, Che, Junta, Iranian Hostage Crisis, Star Wars, Chernobyl, Solidarity, plus 100+ more. Race to SPACE via Space Race track. Prevent NUCLEAR WAR via DEFCON (starts 5, decreases with coups + certain cards; DEFCON 1 = loser = whoever caused it). INFLUENCE 60+ countries on world map; battleground countries (blue-star + red-star) determine scoring; regions scored via SCORING CARDS. VICTORY: 20 VP (Victory Points; earned via region scoring + auto-triggers like Europe control) OR loss condition (DEFCON 1 causes loss, Wargames card triggering, Final Scoring at Turn 10 highest VP wins). Considered the DEFINITIVE historical wargame + gateway to the CDG (Card-Driven Game) genre. WAS #1 game on BGG for years (2010-2016; dethroned by Twilight Imperium/Gloomhaven). Also released as digital app (2016 Playdek, PC/iOS/Android).

How it works
Objective
Achieve 20 VP; prevent DEFCON 1 loss; control regions during scoring rounds; race to space; play Cold War via history's events.
Rules
Basic rules
3 phases: Early War (Turns 1-3), Mid War (4-7), Late War (8-10)
Different cards enter deck each phase.
Each turn: draw hand + play 6-7 cards for Ops or Event
Ops = influence/coup/realign/space; Event = card effect.
Opponent's card played for Ops still triggers their event
Central dilemma.
DEFCON: starts 5, decreases with coups/events; DEFCON 1 = whoever caused it loses
Nuclear war threshold.
Space Race for extra ops + rewards
Alternate strategy track.
Region scoring cards trigger regional VP; Europe control = auto-win
Scoring cards randomly drawn; timing matters.
Scoring
VP-based (score card + region control). Win at 20 VP or DEFCON 1 by opponent.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Region Scoring (card triggers) | VP for control, dominance, presence per region |
| Battleground countries controlled at scoring | 1 VP each |
| China Card gain (from asian scoring or event) | Bonus 1 VP for having China Card at final scoring |
| Europe Control at any time | Auto win (rare) |
| Coup / War events (like NATO or Warsaw Pact) | Various VP + effects |
Win condition · 20 VP win threshold OR opponent triggers DEFCON 1 OR Wargames card + China Card control OR highest VP at Turn 10 final scoring.

Twilight Struggle app vs tabletop?+
APP ($10 Playdek, iOS/Android/PC/Mac) is EXCELLENT digital adaptation with tutorial + AI opponent + async multiplayer + PBEM (Play by Email) integration. Great for learning + solo play. TABLETOP ($60) is the full experience with better contemplation time + social interaction. RECOMMENDATION: buy APP first ($10) to learn + play async against friends; add TABLETOP if you love it + want physical experience. Both are truly excellent.
