What is War of the Ring?

WAR OF THE RING is a MASTERPIECE 2-PLAYER ASYMMETRIC WARGAME set in J.R.R. TOLKIEN's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Designed by ROBERTO DI MEGLIO, MARCO MAGGI, FRANCESCO NEPITELLO; published by ARES GAMES (Italy) in 2004; SECOND EDITION 2011 (revised rules + upgraded components). One player controls the FREE PEOPLES (Gondor, Rohan, Wood Elves, High Elves + Elrond's Rivendell, Dwarves of Erebor, Men of the North + Dale) — defending Middle-earth + escorting the FELLOWSHIP to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom; the other controls SAURON's SHADOW ARMIES (Sauron of Mordor, Saruman of Isengard, Southrons + Easterlings, Nazgûl). Uses ACTION DICE (each player rolls 4-6 dice per turn with icons for character/muster/army/event/etc. — allocate dice to actions), HIDDEN MOVEMENT (Fellowship moves via card+face-down + revealed at cities), massive MINIATURES (200+ minis in base game + expansions: Fellowship, Warriors of Middle-earth, Kings of Middle-earth, Lords of Middle-earth), and RICH TOLKIEN NARRATIVE (events like Balin's Tomb, Watcher in the Water, Corruption, Aragorn's revelation, Rangers of the North). 3-4 HOUR EPIC play. FREE PEOPLES WIN by (1) getting Fellowship to Mount Doom, (2) political victory via Elven Rings + Gandalf White + Aragorn crowned + Rohan/Gondor at war, OR (3) accumulating 4 victory points from capturing Free Peoples cities. SAURON WINS by (1) capturing Minas Tirith + Dale + Erebor (Free Peoples cities), (2) corrupting the Ring-bearer to Corruption 12, OR (3) accumulating 10 victory points from capturing Shadow cities. Considered ONE OF THE GREATEST 2-PLAYER WARGAMES ever + best Tolkien adaptation on the tabletop + BGG all-time top-30 game.
