What is Zombicide?

ZOMBICIDE is a COOPERATIVE ZOMBIE-SURVIVAL MINIATURES GAME by CMON (Cool Mini Or Not), launched 2012 via Kickstarter (raised $781k — one of the FIRST BIG board game Kickstarters). Designed by GUILLOTINE GAMES team (Nicolas Raoult, Raphaël Guiton, Jean-Baptiste Lullien). 1-6 PLAYERS COOPERATIVELY SURVIVE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE — set in modern cities (original series), medieval fantasy (BLACK PLAGUE 2015 + GREEN HORDE 2017), sci-fi space (INVADER 2019), old western (UNDEAD OR ALIVE 2020), cursed medieval (CURSED TIMES 2022 + NEW SEASONS), plus licensed CROSSOVERS (Marvel Zombies 2023, Night of the Living Dead 2018, Iron Maiden 2023). GAMEPLAY: kill zombies, complete objectives, level up characters via SCALING SYSTEM — kill more zombies as your character LEVELS UP (Blue → Yellow → Orange → Red danger levels; higher level = more zombies spawn to challenge). Iconic mechanic. CHARACTERS have unique starting abilities + skills unlocked per level (Slippery, Point Blank, Marksman, Ambidextrous, Frenzy, etc.). Combat is DICE-BASED (roll d6 to hit; higher weapon accuracy = more successes needed). WEAPONS scavenged from buildings (Molotov, Ma Deuce, Assault Rifle, Fireball scroll, etc.). Iconic ZOMBIE TYPES: Walkers (standard 1 action), Runners (fast 2 actions), Fatties (tough), Abominations (elite bosses). SCENARIOS are pre-designed (dozens per box) with objectives (find keys, escape, defend, rescue survivors, kill boss). MISSION-DRIVEN CAMPAIGNS in some editions. HUGE FRANCHISE — 10+ seasons since 2012; 2ND EDITION (2021) refined rules + streamlined + made all seasons cross-compatible. 100+ MINIATURES per box; CMON's iconic premium plastic sculpts. Kickstarter delivery model with ~$150 pledge tiers unlocking MANY exclusive minis + expansions. Considered the DEFINITIVE cooperative zombie board game. Also spawned RPG (Zombicide Chronicles, 2020).

How it works

Objective

Complete scenario objectives (find keys, escape, defend, boss kill) cooperatively while killing zombies + surviving.

Rules

Basic rules

  • Each player controls 1-2 characters; take 3 actions per turn (Move, Search, Attack, Reload, etc.)

    Simple action system.

  • Zombies phase at turn end: spawn new zombies, all zombies move + attack players

    Escalating threat.

  • Kill zombies for XP; level up (Blue → Yellow → Orange → Red)

Higher level = more actions + more zombies spawn.

  • Danger level scales with player levels; kill more zombies as you level up

    Iconic scaling mechanic.

  • Search buildings for weapons + items

    Random draw from equipment deck.

  • Complete scenario objective (find keys, escape, defend, boss)

    Pre-designed scenarios.

  • Lose if any player character dies + can't be revived (scenario-dependent)

    Cooperative failure conditions.

Scoring

Cooperative win/loss per scenario. Character XP + level tracking. Campaigns track between scenarios.

Strategies

  • Team roles: tank up front, ranged in back, medic support

    Specialize characters.

  • Kill Runners first (they act twice)

    Priority target for damage.

  • Search key buildings for weapons

    Better weapons transform combat.

  • Manage level-ups: intentional XP push for right character

Don't have everyone hit level cap simultaneously.
